    George Nelson Builder??

I have one of his rifles, a .44 southern mountain rifle, which I purchased from TOW. Great company to do business with and the rifle is very well done, and is accurate and a real looker. Very pleased with his product as you can tell.

What's your favorite sight in target

I like the "Shoot-N-See" stick on targets from Academy (I don't shop for anything at ****'s). The holes are visible at a good distance; and, the small accompanying repair dots make the target last longer.

    Correlation between accuracy and ball/patch

That would be my expectation - a snug fit would be best. I'm new at patched ball and was surprised at the effort needed to ram home the charge while using the recommended, most accurate charge from the builder.

    Correlation between accuracy and ball/patch

I would like the opinion of your experience here. Is there any merit to having a ball/patch combination which is hard to start and ram, and accuracy? If I can start and ram my ball/patch with relative ease will accuracy suffer, or will a ball/patch combination which I must use a starter and...

Need some advice on ramrod channel

I haven't disassembled the rifle. Reluctant to do so. I'm used to barrel bands, not wedges :shocked2:

Need some advice on ramrod channel

The rifle was not disassembled; it was just a little water overflowed the muzzle when I ran the cleaning jag down the barrel. I will try the dowel/sandpaper suggestion, that should work.

Need some advice on ramrod channel

I don't have access to a drill long enough. Your idea with the dowel has merit. Thanks for your reply.

Need some advice on ramrod channel

In cleaning my rifle, some water must have found its way down my ramrod channel. The wood seemed to swell and my ramrod wouldn't go all the way back down. I let it set for a week so the swelling would go down. It didn't and I still cannot seat my ramrod - it seizes with about 3 inches of...

    A flintlock hunting question

I use a rest whenever possible. For paper I will shoot offhand for practice. For hunting, I use a rest whenever possible. Like above stated, if I don't have a good clean shot - I don't take it. That is one of the reasons why I initiated this discussion. On another note, I bought at Academy...

    A flintlock hunting question

apachesx2 You are right, .44 and up over here. I normally hunt with a 30-06; my land is heavily wooded with a few open areas. I just acquired a flintlock and wanted to hunt with it this upcoming season and questioned the effective range for a clean kill. Looking forward to doing my Davey...

    A flintlock hunting question

shotgunner87 I would be very reluctant to shoot a deer at 100 yards with a .44 ball. I question it's penetration abilities and assuring a clean kill. It will probably still have a high muzzle velocity, but, the soft lead would deform and not penetrate far enough to put it down. I'm sure...

    A flintlock hunting question

I have a .44 over 65gn FF. A question for the BP hunting experienced: What is the approximate killing range for deer with the above load? I want a clean kill; assuming I place my shot correctly of course. Would 50 yards be about the outside limit? Never hunted with a flintlock and look...

    Knapping a flint

Sorry, it didn't work for me either. Photos of rolling block and stag horn grips on a pistol. Thanks though. Gary

    Knapping a flint

The time has come to sharpen my flint. Worn down, so I need to dress the edge. I don't want to just start a fresh a flint. Can anyone recommend a site I can go to for some instruction on how to knap a flint? I have searched YouTube, and what's there is more for arrowhead making mainly. Thanks

    Moving my front sight

Whereabouts in Tennessee? Born in Knoxville, raised in Luttrell. I'm a ridgerunner  When a little boy went with my dad to a customer who was building a flintlock in his back room, around 1955. Wanted one ever since.

    Moving my front sight

Zonie, I'm curious. How did you arrive at the correction factor of .0022? With a distance between sights of 31.25"; 31.25"x.0022=.06875" looks excessive. Where am I wrong?

    Moving my front sight

Zonie and Hawkeye, thanks for the suggestions. The math sounds good for a start.

    Moving my front sight

My rifle seems to consistently shoot a little to the left: At 50 yards about 4 inches west of center, at 30 yards about 2 inches west of center. So, I need to shift the front sight a small amount to the left relative to the barrel. Before I embark on this adjustment, I would like some advice...

    Loading problems on my flintlock

I had the chance to fire it last Saturday. I used the balls and patches already listed above. Initial starting of the ball in the muzzle was a chore, but I finally got it down. At 50 yards, standing, unsupported, I was hitting target about 6 inches low. It's me I'm sure and not the rifle...
