Uh, oh, a newbie with a Whitworth!

While I have a Volunteer instead of a Whitworth I found that it shoots better with a pure lead bullet instead of an alloy mix. You might also want to get a platinum lined nipple because these rifles have a tendency to burn out the flash hole readily.

Fiberglass Ram Rod for Kibler Colonial

There are several things I'll never put down a barrel. Hydrogen peroxide, aluminum ram rod, fiberglass ramrod. I use the gun's hickory rod when hunting and have a brass range rod. The secret no one has mentioned is to keep your rod CLEAN. Any rod can be abrasive if you allow dirt and crud to...

    Possible degredation of lock?

It looks to me like punch marks as if the hole was tapped for a 10-32 hole and an 8-32 bolt was used. Maybe there was a ramrod clearance problem and a smaller lock bolt was needed.

    shipping problem UPS

I shipped a lock kit once. When insuring it I was asked what it was. I replied "antique lock parts". If they assumed it was for a door lock that's on them.

    shipping problem UPS

Be honest. Be literal. They are dowel rods. If asked what they're for, say they can be used in cabinet making.

    revolver date codes

A friend of mine just bought a 58 NMA from a small local shop, last one they had. The frame has 20 in a box, no other date code. Did the Italian makers go to dates instead of letters for dating. Also on the bottom of the grip is IT 2020 next to the serial number. My old 58 has XX8...

Finishing Stock with Pure Tung Oil

I've used two types of finish in past years. First one is 1 1/2 oz BLO, 1 oz Turpentine, 1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar. Second is from Smart Dog's tutorial on the ALR forum. 25% tung oil, 25% polyurethane varnish, 50% mineral spirits. I've used this finish on my last two rifles. Do a search on...

    Muzzle blast magazine

I didn't join the NMLRA to get the magazine, I joined to support the group that supports a sport I enjoy. The magazine is an extra benefit. I've shot at Friendship in the late 70's and quite frankly I don't give a damn who won what. I compete against myself. Your mileage may vary.

    Preparation H

All seriousness aside..........Actually I seem to recall a discussion on some forum in the vast wasteland of the interwebs about Prep H being the basis of, or close relation to, Bore Butter. Or maybe it was Vaseline, possibly Chapstick. Whatever, it seems that Bore Butter just had the...

    Barrel Finish?

Naval jelly will give a nice grey finish to a barrel. I used cold blue on my last rifle then scrubbed it off with a maroon Scotch Brite pad. Did it twice and got a nice grey weathered looking finish.

    Horn and antler?

When my wife makes home made vegetable soup, I save the soup bones after they've been boiled. They are often several inches long and thick enough in the wall that they can be used for inlays, toe and heel plates , and muzzle caps. If the inside wall is filed or ground thinner, they'd even make...

    Davis siler lock help

^^^ What they said. A hole in the leather will allow the flint to set back further in the jaws.

    Rust bluing ?

This is my post earlier, #13. I used Pilkington's Rust Blue but Laurel Mt Forge is also good to use. Card between coats and use distilled water for boiling for 5 minutes. For a finer finish, card sooner for each coat. Waiting longer will give you a somewhat duller finish. My experience anyway...

    JEDEDIAH STARR- WHAT'S THE DEAL???

I just ordered a set of Ampco nipples for a revolver from them last week. Came in 3 days, price for 6 was $28, shipping added $10 to the price. Most places I checked wanted $5-6 per nipple, shipping was about the same. Their prices were in line with others. No complaints here.

    Watching Jeremiah Johnson

Chief Dan George and Russell Means have passed away. I saw Means once in a TV interview. He was a very intelligent and erudite man as well as being a great actor.

    Shootable antique?

Sometimes the skirt of a Minie ball would separate from the body and the lead ring would remain stuck in the bore near the breech if an over charge of powder was used. I'm not sure if the .54 Lorenz used a Minie style bullet or not so this might not be what it is.

    General Black Powder Shooting Stupidity

I had a fifth grade class in 1973 for my student teaching. We were studying the Civil War so I brought in a Springfield rifle with bayonet, Spencer carbine, Mansfield & Lamb cavalry saber, leather cartridge box, and some grape shot. Kids were excited, my supervising teacher was impressed and the...
