    Going to cast some RB

Well, it should be in the 60s when I am casting. I will turn the temp up a bit, hoping the .490 shows up soon.

    Going to cast some RB

I am in the process of cutting up some lead sheeting from an old Air Force radar shop I was able to scrounge years ago, it is pretty close to pure lead. I am going to drain my 20:1 I use for the Sharps 45 2.1" and my handguns, I give this soft lead a try with some 58 cal RB, a few 50 cal Lyman...

    Maxiball

That is something that I have been looking into.

    Maxiball

I just realized I didn't really give a range report. The target is the Maxiballs, about 3 5" at 55 yards, I recovered 2, in the picture they are flanked by a couple of recovered 192gr cup point bullets from my 38-40, still need to wash and weigh them, but I know they are too hard, and a much...

    Maxiball

So I have embarked on a journey with Dad's Hawken. While it shoots great groups with a .490 ball and a .015 patch, it completely shreds a .018 patch. So I ran my cell phone borescope down, and the horrible pitting from Dad not properly storing the rifle, and the resulting rust that came from...

    Maxiball

So, winds were a light 5-7 quartering, temperature was 62 degrees. Target set at 55 yards from the muzzle. Load was 70 grains of Goex FFFg under the 370gr Lyman Maxi with no over powder wad and simple Crisco for lube. Lube seems to be adequate, as I had a good amount at the muzzle after firing...

    Maxiball

Sun is up, going to be 60 degrees here in the basin, a good day to send some lead down range. I am going to adjust my alloy, cast some from a little purer sheet lead I have, about 300# worth. Still shopping for a round ball mold.

    Maxiball

They'll learn soon enough. Expect it will be worse than my 525gr bullets from the Sharps with the same charge due to the Sharps being about 4# heavier.

    Maxiball

Just for S&Gs, I am going to shoot some Maxiballs from the Hawken, I have the mold, so I thought why not try them. They weigh just under 370 grains, and I am going to try 70gr of FFFg. I will hopefully remember to take some pictures.

    Made Smoke

That is great! Someday when some other interests drop off, I would love to try a flintlock, maybe a smoothbore. Love hearing about others journeys as I am making my own. I have done a fair amount of LR shooting out to a mile for fun. My favorite bucket list accomplishment to date is making...

    mini balls

I use coconut oil and beeswax, I used to use lard as well, but almost all lard has salt in it, wanted to avoid it so I switched to coconut oil. Probably unnecessary.

    Made Smoke

Thank you everyone. It seems that I have a few items to purchase. This rifle was my Dad's, he gave it to me in 2005, he asked for it back in 2015, as he had intended to do some local Eastern Oregon shoots, but life didn't work out. He brought it back earlier this year, but most of the...

    Made Smoke

Finally shot the 1973 T/C Hawken today, first time in 8 years or so. Had my steel silhouette target sitting at 60 yards, after a sight adjustment, my load of 60grs FFFg put 3 .490 PRB in a 1 inch circle. Had a great time, and look forward to the next outing. Dave
