    Fire starting

I have quite a bit of leftover linen shirt fabric that I've never thrown away; pieces too small to do anything with, & too big to throw away. These get cut up into small squares & turned into char cloth. Last March, a fellow camper at a rendezvous told me about ocum, & gave me a fairly...

What caliber and style for you?

Mark me down as in favor of the Lancaster pattern, any of the Golden Age makers; Dickert, Albright, Gumpf, Fordney...they're all good. Fifty caliber is a good, all purpose caliber.

Flintlock or percussion for a first purchase?

I went directly from BB guns to black powder with a two decade hiatus in between. First rifle I had was a flintlock Dixie Gun Works Tennessee mountain rifle. Nobody told me I couldn't do that. Get the flintlock. It's about the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
