Ok to use unmentionable brass casings for casting?

I have a couple of buckets of brass casings and wondered if the brass would be ok to use for casting parts. Besides the issue of spent primers, some of the brass is filled with mud and then smashed making it impossible (or at least very time consuming) to clean. They were. Collected from various...

Need to make a part into a spring, procedure?

Well... I always pre-polish BEFORE hardening. Always in the direction of the lever arm. ( Think of a spring as lever that returns to its normal position after being stressed.) However, I always polish AFTER hardening to ensure that all micro-cracks that can appear on the surface after hardening...

Need to make a part into a spring, procedure?

Working with 6150 Annealing is done by heating to 1550 degrees and allowingit to slowly cool. To harden, heat to 1600 degrees and oil quench. Tempering is done between 650 and 700 degrees. A cast replacement spring from somewhere like Track of the Wolf or The Rifle Shoppe will require you to...

Need to make a part into a spring, procedure?

That spring you show is 6150 steel. You need to shape it, harden it, polish it, and then temper it. If you need to bend it, anneal it first to ensure it will not snap. It is exactly what you need. William

    Flintlock muzzleloaders will rule again

You might want to rethink your statement... Today's announcement of "nuclear device in orbit to take out satellites", is exactly an EMP device that will disable all satellites upon detonation unless properly shielded. Besides emitting radiation to our upper atmosphere.

Where to obtain flat spring steel?

If it is a "kit" from TRS... Follow these instructions or send back for free tempering. If sent back... no idea when you will get it back... Hope this helps. William

    Herman Rupp 1793 Build

Great job! As I am currently building my first also, these subtle "features" are not immediately apparent. You learned much in the process and put it all to use in this one. You next one will reflect that. An artist knows all the mistakes in the art they created. However, they are seldom seen...

    India Torador Matchlock Wall Gun

Allright... still on first cup of coffee.... Remember the difference from boot camp? "... this is my rifle, this is my gun! This one's for fighting! This one's for fun!" Now back to our (ir-) regularly scheduled nonsense... Have a great day all! William

    My First Wheellock

Well.. should not be flint! Get some iron pyrite. That is what is used. @Flint62Smoothie did a nice write up on how to obtain some inexpensively. Looks like the TRS large Dutch wheellock kit. There are 3 different stocks for that lock. Have fun! William

    Wheellocks at the Met

Yes. Maker is Peter Peck from Munich. Purveyor to Emperor Charles V & Bavarian Duke Albrect V. 1550 or so... He made quite a few Double barreled wheellocks. He also liked the dual dogs... spin to the other pyrite if one did not work. Different than a separate dog assembly. William

Finally worked on my Jäger again. Have not worked on it for ~6 months. Hopefully have it ready for fall. The patchbox cover end is soldered & fitted. After I finish the latch, I will finish shaping the "butt" end of the cover. William

Trying to make a naval mount for my field cannon

You are welcome! Please keep us informed of your progress. I still need to make some "heavy" wheels for my little .50 cal. The washers are just place holders of the appropriate size. Touched it off and it flew back 3 feet! Have to bolt it to a block of cement! William
