    Rifle Questions

From what I understand, parts are going for around $1100 to $1200. That should make the conversation with yourself, easy. You can always resell it here for more than that. Good Luck! Walt

    Mineral oil and Vasilene.

Yes, on numerous occasions. Some clubs even recommend switching to spit patches for Monthly Shoots and Rendezvous in the summer. I've also heard that Linen works best this time of the year over Cotton. The reason was given but am currently having a Senior Moment. Walt

Is there a way to postpone cleaning a ml?

I’ve taken the family out shooting several Muzzies at a time. Most get cleaned right after. Depending on how tired I am, one might get left over until the next day. If they’re going to continue with the hobby, I teach them how to do it. However, I’m kind of particular about how my guns are...

Is there a way to postpone cleaning a ml?

Even modern caps will create pitting if the residue is not cleaned off shortly after use. I'm not sure why. Walt

Is there a way to postpone cleaning a ml?

Much depends on humidity. I once left my rifle in a case for several days in a hot room. When I realized I hadn't cleaned it there was quite a bit of surface rust present. A little Hoppe's and light rubbing with some steel wool took care of that. Walt

    I Stand Corrected!

Looks like they were drilled to side-mount something. Maybe a Peep sight. Walt

    I Stand Corrected!

I told myself I'd never own a side-lock muzzleloader with a scope! I received a call from my local ML Shop informing me of a recently acquired USA-made CVA Mountain Rifle with a long Brass Scope. I had a fairly good idea of what it was. Sure enough, it had a Tasco 1860 Retro Brass Scope...

    Best lead for casting ball?

I've been fortunate enough to have acquired scrap lead sheeting from remodeled X-Ray rooms, TWICE! I probably have at least 150 pounds right now. I would assume that diving, fishing, and wheel weights have something in them to make them harder and more durable. Walt

    RWS no 11s

Buy them while you can! According to several reliable sources, Baretta bought RWS and only intends on making Musket caps. Walt

CCI # 11 Magnum Cap Not Fitting

They had one for $3.99. This one seems to be of a little better quality. Walt

CCI # 11 Magnum Cap Not Fitting

I've had problems with CCI caps in the past but that's because I'm using a nipple other than the one from the factory (MSM Spitfire Magnum). Apparently, the outside diameter of #11 nipples is not the same. I had a similar experience with the first strike seating the cap and the second...

New guy from Southern Oregon! Not Portland!

Welcome from Cottage Grove, just over the Lane County border, unfortunately! Walker Mountain Long Rifles shoots the first Saturday of the month @ Josephine County Sportsman's Park in Merlin. Little Butte Mountain Men were located in Medford but lost their Shooting spot a couple of years back...

    What is this called?

I believe those were called Flame-N-Go Fusils. They are listed in Sam Fadala's "Black Powder Handbook". Nothing new. You will also find a similar item in Ned Roberts "The Muzzle-Loading Cap Lock Rifle". Developed in the late 1800s to take advantage of the new primer technology. Walt

I'm done with EMSS patch material.

Thanks for the info, Bob!!!!! Especially that last part. I have that same caliper bought long ago at a Muzzle Loader shop called the Frontloader in Fontana, CA. Walt

What ML movie should be made now?

I'd like to see a remake of the Big Sky. Walt

I'm done with EMSS patch material.

I have come to the conclusion that the thickness on the label is measured SNUG and NOT compressed. My local shop usually carries Bridgers Best but sometime EMSS. They occasionally buy another shop's inventory when they close their doors. You can tell that some of this stuff is years old. I...

Can anyone supply a list of states where a BP gun must go to an FFL holder?

Wow, I was going by a transaction from a few years back where they had to ship a ML pistol to my local FFL. Thanks! Walt

Can anyone supply a list of states where a BP gun must go to an FFL holder?

The only one I know for sure is New Jersey. I did a Google search and couldn't find anything definitive. Walt

    Perfect Range Rod

I really like my Stainless Steel Creedmoor Rods from TOW. The extra weight aides in loading and I can use a Sharpie for witness marks and clean them off later should I want to use it for another rifle. The only thing I don't like is the handle is not pinned to the rod and can come off if you...
