You don't mention examination of recovered patches. With a new barrel I have often experienced cut patches from a sharp muzzle. This combined with an excessively tight patch that is strained and stressed on its way down the bore.

So I purchased one of the Ebay brass flasks and yes it leaks. Upon inspection I can see that the cause is a loose / sloppy fit between the bottom of the head and shutoff valve. My original pictured above has a much tight fit and does not leak. The shutoff valve and lever are peened together...

Its for attaching a small sign. A reminder to put some damned oil on the lock works. 🤨

Had to dig out my mold. Its a 575213. Have always used 60 grains FF. The balls are measuring .575". Where to buy a few larger balls to try?

I have a 70's Zoli Zouave and Lyman minie mold that have never given me exceptional accuracy. The minie seems undersized to the point that I'm afraid it might slide out of the barrel if carried muzzle down. Not too bad after a fowling shot. What other minies have provided good results in a Zouave?

I'm not familiar with the 1861 Springfield, however after looking at my Zouave I'm thinking I could remove the nipple and pass a wire through into the chamber to determine if the minie ball skirt is blocking the path of ignition. Worming a wire having a sharp tip should produce lead shavings if...

I am not a fan of the accelerated / fast result browning methods and get excellent results with the traditional slow rusting solution. I prefer a more polished surface finish and this one by Wahkon Bay works best for me. They apparently have patent protection on their formula. TOW has developed...
