CVA Big Bore mountain rifle lock issues

If it shoots well I'd replace the lock with a L&R RPL - I did this to mine and never looked back - ignition now 100%

    How many years Muzzleloading experience?

About 1970 built a hideous mix of 303 barrel and shotgun lock - it didn't shoot particularly well but it got me started. In New Zealand 17 years olds aren't supposed to build firearms apparently - got me into a bit of grief but I still have it - just to keep me grounded. Have built and helped...

Suggestions wanted, busted spring on my lock. See image for details...

If the rifle shoots well - why not go the whole hog and buy an L&R RPL - I put one in my old CVA and it's never missed a beat. Awesome product.

    Muzzle Blasts Focus?

I think we all need organisations like the NMLRA - I find value in that; even living in NZ. I have visited Friendship twice (1987 and 89) Best memory is shooting Quail Walk with Max Vickery's 20g Manton - wonderful Guy and a stunning firearm - I wait on each month's edition with anticipation and...

CLOSED GONE - Numrich .45 rifle - FREE - Must pick up

I have fond memories of Numrich barrels - built my first 'serious' rifle using a 45 Numrich Barrel - US$19.99!! - A NZ$20.00 Postal Note was enough to cover the barrel and shipping to NZ!!(it was over 50 years ago) It shot really well and I shot my first Muzzleloaded Red Deer with it. Later I...

    Best Animal fat for lube?

I have used mutton fat in the past - found it worked well but my 'rendering ' may have been wrong because it did go quite rancid after a while.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Spent some time with Rudyard - he's just turned 80. The spread and depth of his interest and knowledge is just amazing. As well as his travelling experiences - he's working on a book I dearly hope he gets it printed. Used the 40cal Bedford we built together (mostly him) on Sunday to try and...

Why do we use pillow ticking? What qualities make a good patch?

Here in NZ I've been buying ticking from "Spotlight" , I've also tried a Cotton Canvas they sell - the same thickness but I find the plain weave of the Canvas doesn't hold up as well as the twill weave of the ticking. I wash the 'size' out too - seems to make a difference.

    Full stock Hawken

Good work!! You should be proud - I'm with other posters - I'd have had a go at 'de-T/Cing' the bolster/snail but don't stress over it.

    making slowmatch....

More should shoot matchlocks !!- I have had so much enjoyment shooting my Rudyard made 44cal Dutch Style Snapping Matchlock - even at the 1989 MLAIC Championships in Germany (poorly - too new to it then!!). Initially I used matchcord from Dixie it was about 1/4" in diametre - after that became...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Drove over the hill to shoot with the Marlborough boys = shot 4 different targets - won the first on the UIT Target with the old 40 Bedford; the light changed and the results got a bit 'variable' after that but still a lot of fun - shot from Duncnz's usual spot (where were you Dunc?)

    Possible gunpowder related tragedy

Hard to say after the event - a local shooter has had a tray of Primers detonate in a hand priming press - really messed him up but he's ok now. Also in Australia a shooter had a can of powder explode on him - luckily only damaging his house - that was put down to Double Base powder...

    Boot Pistols?

Used for anything and everything - Defense/Hunting even target shooting - there sems to have been almost endless variety. This is my Target 32 made by Elmer Johnson of Mattawa Washington. The illustration is from Logan's Book.

    Vent hole location?

It wouldn't be hard to machine a 'blank' vent plug; then position the vent as 'favourable' as possible then relieve the inside - a lot would depend on the diameter of the plug. I'm in NZ I don't know Bobby Hoyt - but by the number of times his name comes up he sounds capable. But as some have...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Caught up with Rudyard and borrowed a couple of NZ- Tony Hawkins Moulds from him a 45cal 350GGr and a .38cal 250ish gr.

    Vent hole location?

It wouldn't be too hard to make an eccentric bush and move the vent closer to the center of the pan without any other surgery. If the rest of the Gun is ok I'd buy it!

    A Moment of Weakness

I 'rebuilt' a poorly assembled kit of a 45 percussion CVA - forget the joining plate and join the stocks without it - you'll have to do something different with the nose cap - I replaced mine with self made one and after a lot of grief with the lock I finally replaced it with an L&R RPL. I also...

    Boot Pistols?

See if you can get a copy of Herschel Logan's Book - "The Pictorial History of the Underhammer Gun"; it'll give you a great insight into Guns with the Hammer underneath!!
