I found an original civil war Enfield rifle.

There was an attempt to buy Enfield Pattern Rifles from Belgium during the civil war but the quality was so poor they were rejected but having said that; the back sight pictured looks very like the Indian ones I've seen. Perhaps Rudyard has an opinion?

    Making patches

I've used precuts but prefer to cut at the muzzle - I reckon there're automatically centered -just needs a really sharp patch knife no 'sawing' required.

    Turning junk into gun parts

I inherited a WW2 era Myford Lathe from my father I've use it to make so many M/L parts - percussion drums/lock screws/ramrod pipes (from old rifle barrels)/ramrod ends/jags/ball pullers - it just goes on. I also have a little Unimat but the Myford is the workhorse (not bad being over 80 years...

    Thompson Center Bought from S&W

Have a T/C G2 Contender(centerfire) and just love it but if they'd called the 'Hawken' something else I'd have accepted it has a serviceable albeit unauthentic entry to Muzzleloading which should have been seen as a stepping stone to the more historically appropriate and not an end point in...

    12L14 Steel good enough?

I read an article many years ago when they were discussing steel for M/L tubes and they glued a plug into a cardboard mailing tube and discovered it would sustain any "reasonable" black powder load they tried in it! So where's the problem with 12L14? Especially as some very respected barrel...

    12L14 Steel good enough?

I think Douglas quit for purely economic reasons - cut rifled M/L barrels cost so much more to make than Buttoned and the market was probably not worth the effort. I've used a number of Douglas Barrels over the years - all awesome shooters. My 40 Bedford still going strong after over 30 years.

    Muzzleloader magazine

The vagaries of international mail to New Zealand; I received the Jan/Feb issue before I got the Nov/Dec one ! Still waiting for Mar/Apr But still worth the wait it's an exceptional publication . At least the information is credible, most of the internet is full of misinformation. I still miss...

Very stuck minie ball, tried everything having to pull the breech plug

I had to deal with a very stuck (half way down) Lee Wadcutter 58 in a Navy Arms Buffalo Hunter - in the end I debreeched it and with the barrel held in soft jaws in the Vise I used a length of 1/2" steel rod and a 2Lb hammer to drive it out and it really took some shifting but in the end it came...

    Landsknecht Arquebus and Petronel

Rudyard made the 'horn' tipped ramrod on my 1570's Dutch Matchlock (he made that too) and that was mid 1980's and it's still in ace condition. I really treasure the gun and my friendship with 'Rudyard'. Actually the tip is really a sleeve and the rod timber comes right to the end with a tiny...

    Greetings from Oklahoma!

Welcome from Nelson New Zealand - I spent a very enjoyable couple of days in 1987 in Oklahoma visiting the J M Davis Museum and the Wool-la-roc foundation - just awesome and excellent hospitality from the Motel in Pawhuska. Great memories.

    Landsknecht Arquebus and Petronel

I have a 44 cal Dutch - style snapping matchlock from the same maker - I used it at the MLAIC World's in 1989 (badly - my fault) , the maker also shot it in the gunmakers match at Friendship on my way home to NZ - all there were amazed at the speed of ignition - they're quick!! Being a...

    eBay Flintlock Lock

I'd agree either H&A or an early Dixie that has been worked on; I had a Dixie lock that had come from a Royland Southgate Rifle and that had an identical Bridle with no inner bearing - it had been percussioned when I got it - the sear spring could be a replacement hence not fitting the slot in...

    Hi there from New Zealand

All the best in your new country - very fond memories of the 1987 MLAIC event at Kitchener - Kiwis and Cannucks get on great. You're moving closer to BP Heaven as well - Friendship. Go for it!!

    old bullet mold

I don't think the old guys used to cast a lot of balls at one time: I've got a couple of old moulds and have cast balls out of them - the handles get real hot real quick. But I agree they are delightful pieces of historical kit.

How I Stripe my Ram Rods. A how-to video.

I pretty much do the same but I use painters masking tape and I follow the spiral with the torch and clean off with Shellite or Coleman Fuel - a light stain; a coat or two of Tru-Oil then use Boiled Linseed after that.

    Homemade cleaning Patches

Out here in NZ we get 'ex-mil' cotton flannelette in rolls usually called '4 x 2' - 4 inches wide with a line every 2 inches - the correct size for cleaning a 303. It's usually about NZ$9 a roll - lasts for ages and does a good job.

Last of the Mohicans kit bags

Welcome from NZ - yes I loved LOTM as well. Nathaniel's Rifle was of course conjectural at best for the period. but still very enjoyable. Loved the music score as well.

    What is this stock?

Some CVA Mountain Rifles that go to New Zealand were definitely Maple (That's nearly 40 years ago) - albeit rather Plain
