ROA Centennial Edition - What have I got?

Been watching this thread for some time without jumping in. I can’t see the big deal with the “beauty ring”, mine pictured after over 40 years of use, at least 200 rounds a month. It is what it is and I can still sell it for A$1000+, but I won’t. I’ve replaced three sets of nipples due to wear...

    Ugly Hammer

I think you hit the nail on the head, 40 years of busting caps has imprinted the hammer. Get it faced off and the hammer nose to bring them both into their proper status

1 part beeswax, 1 part olive oil

I used Peanut oil, not only it’s a high temp oil but also what I had hanging around. Started 50/50 but was too stiff on cooling. Heated until mixed and stir whilst cooling to keep in solution. Checked consistency when cooled then adding oil until the mixture was where I wanted it and wouldn’t...

Small glass vials for holding powder charge

I’ve had my glass vials now for almost 40 years, yeah a couple have broken. In the scheme of things I have lost more caps☹️

    Ruger Old Army Help

Did you touch the trigger? ROA’s are notorious for clamming up if you touch the trigger when placing on half cock. Jiggle the cylinder out, cock and unlock the revolver. Put the cylinder back in and keep your finger off the trigger. The trigger return spring is fine, it’s the way they’re built...

    Too small balls

My wife’s Uberti takes a 380 ball, cylinders measured 378. You need a ball gauge to accurately measure inside the chamber, the flats on the calibres give a false reading.

One more idea on bore cleaning (sorry).

Worked perfectly, no issues with finish on the gun. Drying time in the dishwasher good enough to get rid of excess water, a quick spray with your favourite lube and ready for next time.

    Grandpa stories

Never knew my grandfather, he left home at 12 and went to sea, went under sail, steam and turbine. Didn’t speak any English so never got his masters ticket. Had three ships blown from under him running the North Sea during WW2. Could never go back to Spain as the facists would have hung him...

    Ruger old army loads

I’ve been shooting mine now for 40+ years, anywhere from 20-30 3f down hard on the powder. Just been playing with filler (polenta) equal volume of powder/filler, can’t say I notice any difference in accuracy. As long as your balls don’t fall out of the cylinder when you point the gun downhill it...

    My balls are wrinkly ;)

Yep, too cold. But there are probably lots of dead injuns from people who used wrinkled balls. In the whole scheme of things the target doesn’t care, up to 50 yards you won’t tell the difference, check the diameter and get your mould and lead hotter.
