How varied was the craftsmanship on original Kentucky rifles?

From the books I have and the ones pictured online and the ones I have seen that never have there pictures published the quality is all over the place. There were some that were truly masters of the craft. Then there were others who clearly didn't have the ability or training and their rifles...

    Roundballs verses Conicals..??

Interesting When I got my tools from Mr. Wood he did state that they wouldn't work with conicals. Would be interested in seeing what kind of accuracy your getting. I have a rifle I built just for hunting a .45 with a 1 X 24 twist just to shoot conicals. having been a target shooter so any rifle...

    Roundballs verses Conicals..??

Would be interested in Who made the coning tool you used? The ones I have are from Joe Wood but I know of 2 other people who also make a version of coning tool.

    Lifespan of a Rifle?

My point exactly. Fancy carving, engraving and inlays do NOTHING to help put meat on the table for a frontier farmer trying to feed his family. The fancy guns survived because they were more of a status symbol for the wealthier townsmen and probably didn't get used that much.

    Roundballs verses Conicals..??

You pointed out in the video that your rifle had a coned muzzle. When I got my coning tools from Joe Woods he cautioned that a coned muzzle would not work with conicals. That might be the problem with the lack of accuracy with the conicals.

    Lifespan of a Rifle?

The idea that you see over and over again that all rifles were these expensive items that would cost a years wages just isn't true. If you look in Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in the Golden Age Kindig lists information from Leonard Reedy's Journals that cover the period from 1819 to 1837...

Long bar sight for a Kibler SMR

Given what you described as looking for this is a design by John Schippers that should fit what you are looking for. I keep saying I am going to make one of these but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Condemning an old rifle, rather than repairing it.

No way . I would give him a quote for the work that would be needed to repair it payable before any work was done. Then it is up to him what he wants to put into it.

Nipple placement on direct nipple to barrel guns(mule ears and such)

Have done Mule Ears and Underhammers with the nipples slightly in front of the breech plug. My question on the second model through the breech plug you would need to drill a straight section for the nipple then how are you going to drill the rest of the way through the breech plug at an angle...

Help with ID on this Target rifle

I had a rifle that I bult with one of those kits and have one of the kits that I haven't put together. If you look at the hammer there is a hole through it where a pin goes and that is where the spring attaches to the hammer. will see if I can get a picture of the spring and post it.

TRADE Douglas 40 Cal. Octagon barrel 44 inch for Smooth bore round barrel 44 inch.

I would dearly love to get ahold of another .40 cal. Douglas barrel but at my age now a 1" barrel is probably going to be more than I can handle. The .40 cal. Douglas I made back in the late 70's is pretty much a smooth bore now it was shot so much.

Help with ID on this Target rifle

That would be a Cross stick/ Light Bench rifle. The lock appears to be broken. The trigger guard on those locks does double duty as also the mainspring, That spring appears to be broken which renders the lock useless. I still have one of those lock kits that I have never put together. Don't know...

    Calibre questions

Per NMLRA rules the individual matches of an aggregate can be fired with different rifles. However each individual match can only be fired by one rifle. The only exception for the individual match is if the rifle becomes disabled during that match and cannot be repaired you would be allowed to...

TRADE Douglas 40 Cal. Octagon barrel 44 inch for Smooth bore round barrel 44 inch.

As smoothshooter pointed out barrel would be an octagon. Also what is the width of that barrel?

    How heavy is too heavy?

I think it will all depend on where the balance point is that will determine if you can shoot it. Lot of people shoot heavy target rifles offhand. If you look at the size of many of the original rifles they were carrying rifles that weighed a lot more than what people want today. It amazes me...

What would make you break out your wallet?

This is one I made for hunting. I used a Rigby stock from Pecatonica. I used a .45 caliber 1 in 24 twist barrel to shoot conicals. Have no idea who made the barrel something I picked up at friendship many years ago.

    what brand barrel?

I have had good luck with any barrels I have used, even one that I have no idea who made it shot very good. If I had to pick a favorite it would be Douglas. They just seemed to be more forgiving on the loads that you could shoot them with. Still have a .45 Douglas been sitting in the workshop...

    Rifle plug removal, field removal

In my opinion removing the breech plug for any reason is an actual last resort. Recently worked on a Cabela's Hawken with a load in the barrel that the shooter couldn't get to go off. The flash channel was packed full of brass bristles from a bore brush and fouling so that no fire was getting to...
