    Like steel not all brass has the same make up. Some will blacken nicely some not so well. Definitely make sure it is clear of any coating. I like to buff with scotchbrite the clean with acetone.     Get some thin epoxy and inject inside tumble around until you think it's all coated inside. Maybe a couple coats?
