    Storing rifles prior to shooting?

When cold or cool steel meets warm moisture laden air condensation happens.

Jurgen Kreckel custom rural flee market find

Is that a hex set screw plug in the flash channel hole that's drilled in from the left side?

    Aqua Fortis

My usual advice is to try it out on some scraps first so you know what will happen.

New .58 caliber Hawken type Rifle

It should be a real shooter with the Rice barrel. I have a 54 cal Rice and it's the smoothest loading and best shooting barrel I have. I just ordered another Rice barrel in 45 for the next build.

    round ball mold expansion

Borrow an aluminum mold and try casting lead balls at different temperatures. That will give you something you can accurately measure that should answer your question.

    Patch question

I can't tell if they're burned or torn up. How smooth does the barrel feel when you load it? Some barrels need a lot of shooting to smooth them out or they can be lapped with some green Scotch Brite wrapped on an undersized bronze brush. You shouldn't need an over powder wad if the patch/ball...

    The Hawken Shop Conversion kit

Looks great. My main gripe with the TC's has been that the stock looks more like a club that was shaped with a belt sander. That and the ugly sights. And the trigger guard. Post some more pics when it's all done.

If you had only two choices.

I don't know if the OP is considering having a custom barrel made but if he is he may also be able to order a left hand twist. The reason I mention this is that my ancestor's rifle from the 1840's is a 40 caliber with a 7 groove left hand twist barrel.

If you had only two choices.

Could this be why many barrels had 7 grooves? They couldn't decide between 5 and 9?

How much powder for dove load?

I've been told to figure the lead I think I need and then double it.

    TC Pennsylvania Hunter Issue

The right trigger guard is one of the hardest things to find, at least in my experience. They're either too low in the bow for the trigger or the wrong shape or the wrong material or something. I'm going through all that myself trying to find one for the build I have in mind. If one is close it...

SOLD - Pending funds .45 Cal Flintlock Longrifle by T. Fellowes

Nice rifle! You need to add another photo of it with your name and date on a piece of paper. Forum rules.

Can you rust blue parts long after the browning process?

Save your marriage! Go to the local Goodwill store and buy a 3 or 4 dollar stainless steel pot.

    Kibler 32 SMR

A shallow dovetail will work just fine as long as it isn't filed too wide. I replaced the brass front sight on my SMR with a steel one just because that's my preference.

    what brand barrel?

The old Douglas were good barrels. I still have a 32 and a 45 I bought from Golden Age Arms. They are a 48 twist and are as accurate as I can shoot. I have a Rice 54 that is an excellent barrel. The main difference I find in modern barrels is that some are smoother than others. The Rice barrel...

    TC Pennsylvania Hunter Issue

You can plug that space behind the trigger plate with a piece of wood and if you match the stain fairly close the repair won't be too noticeable once the trigger guard is installed.

Plug the hole and use a wood screw. My ancestor's rifle wood tang screw has held pretty good since the 1840's.

Anyone else's gun like a very tight load ?

You bring up a good point, what to do on a woods walk or a stand and shoot from a bag type match. I've always used a looser ball/patch combination and spit for lube. A couple of years ago I went to a coned muzzle using Joe Wood's tool and it changed my life, for the better. I seem to hang in...

Anyone else's gun like a very tight load ?

It all depends on the size of the group you're after and how much effort you're willing to spend to get it.
