    Whole lotta shootin goin on!!

Is there any way a solo visitor could participate? Living 2,000 miles away pretty much prohibits joining a regular NSSA team. Have rifle muskets, leathers, some uniform items, just no place out west to do anything like this.

    Greetings from Gettysburg.

Welcome! I still remember my first visit there as a youngun...the Jennie Wade house....that hole in the door....widened up by decades of probing fingers. Such an amazing place in history.

    Dark Finish on standard maple

I found that aqua fortis on the open grained areas of maple can really get dark, almost black. So, on my most recent builds, I scrub it back significantly with scotchbrite after blushing. This evens out the coloration between the close and open grained areas. It also seems to get darker with...

    New member from Southern NM

I believe there is a Rondy hosted by the NM Mountain Man association at or near Founder's Ranch in Edgewood but I don't attend. I like to tinker/build more than shoot. I know. Weird.

Shot the old Lyman 54 some yesterday

.526 ball is an option and yes, GPR barrels can be pretty rough inside. I swabbed the bore well over 100 strokes with green scotchbite to smooth mine out.

    Help With Valuation

Don't sweat the online...I've used gunbroker to buy and sell several times with no problems at all. You simply do not ship it until the money is in your account. Postal Money Order is very popular and bullet proof. Both are fine looking guns. Start high. Can always go down.

    Unplugging patent breech? Loaded rifle…

oil down a muzzleloader bore is dancing with the devil. But, it's a dance we have to do else battle the demons of corrosion. A dry patch wipe (or two) followed by a snapped cap is the path forward but getting that %^&#! patent breech clean and dry can still be problematic. (A patch on a .22...

Starting a pecatonica early lancaster - help?! :)

With the pre inletted stocks, you have to check the barrel setback, specifically the breech plug face vs. center of the flash pan. If not careful, you can get the touch hole too far aft, interfering with breech plug. One can groove the plug face a bit (not uncommon in original specimens, so...

    Whats Everybody Doing?

Yeah...ladders...been a part of my career and am ready to use them very little in the future. My neighbor has one of those floor-to-ceiling book shelves with rolling ladder. He fell off it earlier this week. Hit his head, brain bleed, couldn't communicate, ambulance, surgery to drain the...

Cleaning that little space at the bottom of the barrel

a sub-caliber breech face scraper can get in there, or a .22 cal brass brush. Track of the Wolf has such implements. Welcome to the horrors of the chambered breech. A solution to a problem that never existed. rant mode off.

How far does spent patches go ?

Usually into the nearest dry weed or patch of dead grass. Seldom onto the bare dirt next to them.

    Casting for the first time

runnin' ball is a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon! I dump them onto a 100% cotton bath towel, folded several times so it's very cushy. I pour a lot of Minie balls and don't want the drop to distort the skirts.

    How old is this powder?

Have no idea but MAN what a great find! I bet that powder will go bang like it was born yesterday. Black powder is magical. It just lasts and lasts.
