I have never before seen that sort of exterior muzzle treatment. I like it. I'll bet it makes quickly centering a ball board easier.

    Starting another scratch build

Thank you very much for this. I think you achieved what you set out for & have a fine, basic firelock - just what you described. I'm sure many were built on the frontier, wherever that was at the time, with less than ideal stock wood and supplies. I've watched many fine rifles, built skilled...

A first attempt at a Gourd Canteen

On my "to do"list too. W/ that honey source, you could maybe start a mead.

Only good enough to compensate for the failing nut behind the trigger.

    My bear grease is lazy

Since it's so disappointing, I'll be happy to take it off your hands (said hopefully but not really expectantly). I like it. it works for me - I even like the smell. I picked some up a few years ago, but haven't seen any available for a while. I'm unlikely to hunt a bear in the foreseeable...

    Lock care

Worse? Sure looks terrible enough to me. Is that a shadow where the tumbler shaft comes through the bridle, or is it really gapped that badly? You managed a fine recovery. Were you able to teach your friend as effectively?

    Barrel Condition

Great bore pictures. What brand/model borescope are you using? Mine is good enough to have given me a similar shock, but on a smooth bore. Bringing it back to mirror-smooth was easier than what you faced. Yea, I'm compulsive about bore (and general) maintenance, too, Mine's 2nd hand & a...

    Track's mink oil

I've used Mink Oil on leather but haven't tried it as patch lube. I got some bear grease a while ago; use that for patches and to lube my lock. I like that odor. I also tried some deer tallow for patches. I think that stinks. To each their own preferences and tolerances.

    Leaving a loaded powder horn?

I wonder if it's the sulfur in the mix?

    Traditions

I have trouble fumbling round ball too. In cold weather, it's embarrassing trying to find them in grass or snow - and I'm too cheap to write them off. I've gone to loading blocks, when not on the range.

    Strange issue cleaning .50 cal

When a patch sticks, I pour a little alcohol down to lube it. So far, it works the charm. (90% rubbing or painter's denatured. It dries quickly, so it doesn't change my cleaning ritual. ( I keep the good stuff for lubing my gullet - after shooting, of course.)

Got a lathe to play with... built a Cannon!

Don't feel bad over how long it's taking to make a proper carriage. I started one, getting the barrel cast, when I was about 14. Got a naval carriage about 3/4 done then, but ran into trouble making trunnions & covers ( no welding skills). I still vow to finish it but better start soon. I'm 76.

    Strange issue cleaning .50 cal

serious cleaning, I use an undersized jag or undersized (locked wire) brush, wrapped in steel wool. It takes a bit of patience & frequent renewal of the steel wool, but has worked well for me.

    1983 “Rescued” Lyman GPR .54

Thank you. Soaking up info & details. To my eye, you've done a very convincing job. I re-enact, so having a new or relatively new appearing, used gun is logical, so I don't have experience w/ aging finishes.
