Nice clean lines and cuts! I have a feeling you already learned an abundance of how to & skill. WTG :thumb: Larry

Show N Tell your first MLer rifle

I always wanted a flinter and at that time loved the Roman nose style. Ha, until I shot it 😂 . Anyway in 1971 I got rained out on the heavy highway construction job I was working on. I asked my wife of one year if she would go to Dixie Gun works with me. She said yes, and we drove from Omaha...

    Possibles bag, hard or soft?

I prefer a bag that is somewhat stiff, (open if you will) because then the item you are seeking is more visible as well as assessable. Larry

Maybe I am missing something here, but no tang bolt just looks to me like the feller just never got to that point yet. Never know what you will get with something someone else started. Larry

    About your hunting rifles

I don't hunt either. I am too old and no place close to hunt. If I did hunt, I would take a flintlock suited for the hunt. My best looking gun would not be hanging if I wanted to hunt with that rifle. All my hand made guns were made to shoot. You just have to take care of them. Larry

    Loading from the pouch?

JD, Yes loading from the pouch is a different critter. Might take you a trial or two to get the method/organization to make pouch loading smooth. Place only items in your pouch you use, no extras. Extra crap just makes for confusion when you are trying to find the capper, flint knapper...

Info please with cocking effort on Hawken percussion lock

Not trying to be a smart as_ but come on, really, how can a lock have too much downward hammer energy because of lock wood interference? Larry I am running over 12 pounds of hammer cocking effort, and punching holes out of the cap lid at hammer fall. Poundage is measured at the hammer thumb...

Info please with cocking effort on Hawken percussion lock

Right you are on the caps. The gun was made in the 80s. Can't be more than 300 to 400 rounds through it, so worn parts are non issue. When I shot it in the 80s, I used CCI caps. Larry

Info please with cocking effort on Hawken percussion lock

Thanks, all good points to ponder. If the bridle has wear or is binding, why is there so much downward energy to punch holes in the Remmingon #11 caps on a Hot Shot nipple? I shoot flint 95% of the time. If this spring gets ruined no big deal for a shipping wait, cuz it would most likely be...

Info please with cocking effort on Hawken percussion lock

Ok, how does that help the horendous effort to draw the hammer back? Seriously I don't understand how that would reduce the spring tension. thanks Larry

Info please with cocking effort on Hawken percussion lock

Not bragging, but I made the rifle. The lock, barrel and drum were all tuned/timed when it was made. The punched out wafer of cap lid is a solid round that fills the nipple flash hole. The spring tension strenght is way too stout. Even if the lock wasn't punching holes in cap lids, the...

Info please with cocking effort on Hawken percussion lock

I am no expert, but in my years of working with locks I have done both. Thinned the thickness and also removed material from the width. Depending on what I have and the intended end result, I may do both the aforementioned or just one. Two issues I consider are: never leave cuts, scratches...

Info please with cocking effort on Hawken percussion lock

I have a nice Hawken style percussion lock that works well, except it is punching the cap lids into the nipple flash hole. What is going on? Well, when I started looking at it, I realized the cocking effort is waaaaay too stout. I will trim the mainspring to lower the cocking effort. My...

Flintlock or percussion for a first purchase?

I you are not a tinkerer, or detest working on what makes a flintlock tick, better get a caplock. If you want a challenge and more reward in the end get a flintlock. I am not saying flint is any better than cap, but to me there is more reward when it shoots like it was engineered to shoot. Larry

Can a Flintlock pistol beat all the Caplock pistols to win the championship?

"Can a Flintlock pistol beat all the Caplock pistols to win the championship?" Why not? It isn't the gun it is the shooter! Larry

Has anyone tried to make Wedge keys for barrels?

Forest, Place the key stock that is already cut to width and thickness (not length yet) in the vice so only about 1/8" protrudes above the vice jaws. If you extend too high, then the peen hammer blows will bend the key. It will mushroom with repeated hammer blows. When the mushroom...

    How do you hold?

I make my own sights with B as the HOLD, but the back sight vertical is a 180 deg horizontal. For my eyes that eliminates any vaiation in front sight assumtion of consistent alignment. Larry
