    Gun show Whitworth

That would be a dream rifle for me. A real Whitworth from back in that time is just an awesome rifle to have.

    long range

Some have already suggested to talk to Lee Shavers. I normally use Lyman 57 SML peeps to go to 300 yards. They can go a bit farther but if you want to go to 500 or beyond talk to lee. Lewis actually talked me into this sight. I called Lee and he agreed that for my shooting out to 1000 yards...

    Strengthen a main spring..

Just a question. Why do you think you need a new spring? If the hammer falls but doesn't set off the cap it could be that the nipple is the wrong size. The first strike sets the cap farther on the nipple, then the second strike fires. If the hammer cocks at the shot, it could be a worn out...

    Paper patched bullets

It depends on what the gun likes. I use 9# onion skin 25% cotton. I also use 9# onion skin 100% wood pulp. And I also use tracing paper. So on the specs is that .010 added to the bullet? Or .010 thick paper?

    Age hardening lead ?

Yes age hardening happens with lead alloy. Pure lead does not age harden. I have read that you can soften them back up by putting them in the oven and baking them. The exact heat and time I can't remember.

The Dry Ball isn't a new invention.

The only dry ball I have had was the onebi did intentionally to show how to remove one with a grease gun.

I had a stuck............. thanks Idaho Ron for the grease gun cure.

That's awesome. But this thread is not going to be 35 pages🤣🤣 How did you get grease all over?

Over-powder wad - oversize or to bore?

I have been using oversized wads since 2007. For a 50 I use .620" wads. True 1/2" wads didn't shoot as well with my paper patched bullets.

    TC Hawken Cougar

I have only seen one Cougar here in Southern Idaho. it had a cracked stock and was for sale at 700 dollars. If I ever saw one that was in good shape for 6 or less I would get it.

    Soft Pure Lead??

There are different levels of "hard" lead. There is not two kinds of lead, soft and hard. It's well known that hardening lead can make bullets more accurate at muzzleloader velocity. And adding alloy can improve terminal performance on game at muzzleloader velocity.

    lead testing

Fresh melted is my terminology. If a ingot has been made recently, like under a week. Hard lead can test much softer right after is first poured. It can be tough telling how old the ingot is. I won't buy lead for bullets that is harder than 5 to 7 bhn on my tester. I have bought a lot of wheel...

    lead testing

I won't buy fresh melted lead. It's too big of a crap shoot. That being said, you can put bullets in the oven and "soften" them a bit. This is handy if you size bullets. A guy has to get it done pretty quick after heat treating.

    Soft Pure Lead??

All the really hard lead I have will be cast into sturgeon fishing weights and sold when I'm retired.

    Soft Pure Lead??

This post is not aimed at anyone. There is a misconception that there is only two kinds of lead. Pure soft, and hard. That way of thinking is just wrong. With my tester I can tell the difference of hardness in pure lead. Guys that think that "hard lead" can't obturate, or can't at...

    lead testing

That sounds great. Don't tell what you got. I was a part of a huge lead hardness test years ago with a shooting club from California. That was a neat test.
