Please help me identify this gun

Looks a bit like the CVA Squirrel rifle I used to have. It was a 32 caliber but I can't remember what the barrel was across the flats. Could be one of the later production generic "Hawken" style rifles. They tended toward cheaper fittings as they went along. Probably would have to make your own...

    Double barrel percussion pistol

Actually, yours looks like an early version of the CVA Tower Pistol. I bought one that looked just like it in 1974, it was packaged as a CVA kit and built it according to the instructions supplied with it. Mine had the flash hole drilled but the breech does look like the breech plug is a...

    Reference material on percussion revolvers?

Well, I could have named a few but they are all old and out of print as I started collecting original guns back in the 1970's and my books on the old guns are mainly from that era or earlier. I am sure there are newer books out, likely with a lot of newer research info but I don't have any of...

    Blanks Harvested for Black Powder

38 S&W is larger because it is a different cartridge than 38 Special. It dates back to the 1870's (38 Special was developed in the late 1890's) and guns were still being made for it into the 1970's. There are a lot of guns out there chambered for it. S&W, H&R and Iver Johnson revolvers are...

    Grrw muzzleloader identification

Only thing I know is Green River Rifle Works made reproductions of the Hawken style rifle (I think they offered a Leman style rifle as well) back in the 70's and went out of business @ 1980. Had a good reputation but were done in by supplier and credit problems.

HELP identifying this black powder rifle!

Are there any markings on the barrel or lock? Have you had it apart, marks may be on the inside of lock or under the barrel........... Going by what I can see it looks like a fairly modern build. 1960's thru the 1980's era. Screws in the trigger guard, the brass band on the stock (usually seen...

    Ultra-Hi Miroku Japan

If they have good bores $180 for the pair sounds like a good deal to me. The pistol could use a little work but one I had like it was a good, fun shooter. Always liked those CVA Mountain Rifles too!

    Galef & Son pistol identification

Yep, a replica. I used to have a little Spanish made pistol that looked almost identical to this one. Didn't have an importers mark but had a serial number at the breech and was simply marked "Spain". Smoothbore, 41 caliber, it was a lot of fun!

    Oval Bolt Stops

I've never had an issue with the oval stops on a pair of Walkers and a 1'st model Dragoon I've owned. Possibly with sufficient use they might begin to skip but heavily worn rectangular stops will also. I always thought that the most likely reason for the change was a simple matter of machine...

    How old is this powder?

I like the old Hodgdon can. I think they were getting their powder from a British company back then. As to your 30-06 cases, could the lead be a plug that has gotten stuck? I have known people to use a fired cartridge case to carry pre-measured powder charges.

Help with my 17th century flintlock pistol

Crown over V was commonly used as an early English proof (from 1670 to 1813) to indicate it had been viewed and proved by the London Gunmakers Company (under government charter). There are usually other marks as well, most often the barrel makers name or mark as well as Crown over GP. There...

Need help finding production date of this LeMat that came to my possession

If my memory is right these only became available in the late 80;s or early 90's? I can't recall seeing any reproduction LeMats before then and I was a pretty active muzzle loader shooter in the 1970's and 80's (before wandering off into the milsurp world for a long while). I know when my...

    Need help identifying a derringer

I had one like it years ago. Mine was a 40 cal. Used a .390 ball and @ 10/15 grs powder iirc. Spanish made, smoothbore, decent quality and fun to shoot. I got it used, think it was imported in the 60's or early 70's.

    Please help identify projectiles

I would agree that D and E are slugs for shotguns. B and C look like Minie type projectiles for muzzle loaders. B is a traditional style Minie, C being a modern style and has not been sized or lubed. A could be a modern type Minie for 45 cal. ML rifles or possibly for reloading an old black...

    Dixie Gun Works

I've been buying from them for years. When I lived in Memphis I used to drive up to pick through the store, always found something I wanted. Other than the occasional part or accessory I haven't bought much from them in the last couple years. Of course, I haven't bought a lot elsewhere either...

    Flintlock pistol ID

I believe that is the importers mark for Markwell Arms. They were importers of various muzzle loading guns and kits in the 60's and 70's. They are still in business (or at least someone is using that name) but no longer marketing muzzle loaders. Most of the guns they sold back then were Spanish...

Adding some versatility with a Uberti 1858 Carbine

I have one of those little carbines, really like it. Lots of fun and very accurate. Definitely want to keep the support hand back, it throws a lot of fire and a chain fire would be unpleasant (and likely dangerous if you let that hand get forward). I've never gotten peppered from the nipples but...

So how are you supposed to fill this powder canister?

Funny, I've been shooting black powder since the mid 1970's and I've never had any issue with taking the 3 little screws out of a flask head to fill it. Never lost a screw, never had a problem putting the flask head back on and re-installing the screws. After reading some of these posts I must...

REMINGTON NEW ARMY BARREL REPLACEMENT QUESTION.

Finding a barrel in the first place might be an issue. I've no idea what thread they used, it's possible a Uberti barrel might fit but I don't know for sure that they will. Gun Parts Co. (Numrich) lists Uberti barrels available for @ $150 used/$198 new. Haven't checked Dixie but they might have...

    German Jaeger/Target Rifle!

With those large sights I would suspect intended as a target rifle. Most likely using patched round ball though some target shooters did use various types of pointed bullets.
