    .40 for deer??

A .40 will kill a deer, I've done it several times. However, if I was going specifically after deer, especially the larger ones we have around my geographical area, I would prefer something bigger. .40's were used extensively in the past for most everything, but that is more a product of...

Ubert 1866 Revolving Carbine testing with Hodgdon 777, Roundballs, and Kerr Conicals

My wife got the Uberti carbine for me decades ago as an anniversary gift. I thought it would make a nice truck gun, and give me a little more range/power over the 8" revolver. It has never been accurate, and while I am not a great handgun shot, I too can nearly duplicate that accuracy with a...

Ubert 1866 Revolving Carbine testing with Hodgdon 777, Roundballs, and Kerr Conicals

I wasn't sure where to post this, as a percussion rifle or handgun, but here it is. Took my old and almost forgotten Uberti 1866 Revolving Carbine out back to the range today. It was almost, or in fact totally forgotten, until a recent post by another member about one. I decided to go fish it...

NGD Pedersoli Frontier .45 cal flintlock

It has been a long time ago, but I think I bought my replacements sights at an outfit called the Rifle Shoppe. The are low profile, rear sights kind of chunky, and thin, low silver blade with a brass base for front sights. Only paid a few dollars a piece for them 20+ years ago, wouldn't care...

NGD Pedersoli Frontier .45 cal flintlock

I have that exact rifle, and several other Pedersoli Frontiers in flint and percussion. I immediately replace the factory sights with something better and a little more authentic. Easy peasy as they are dovetailed. Factory ramrod goes straight into the trash, replaced by hickory. I also...

Colt signature series 1861 Springfield rifled musket.

Spend the same amount of money and get a good condition original musket to shoot. An antique Springfield or Colt Special Musket will be superior in build quality to any Italian repro, and if any parts ever break (doubtful), are easily procured from several sources. Italian black powder guns...

Accuracy results in Pietta 1858 Remington using Kerr Bullets vs. Roundballs

Got a break from 100° days here in NW Missouri, so I decided to do an accuracy tests comparing round ball (.454) against the Era's Gone Kerr Bullet (225 grain). I used Pyro P for all loads, 30 gr. for round ball @1000 fps, 24 gr. for the Kerr @840 fps. Caps were CCI #11, which I got a bunch...

    Load development

For deer and normal sized hogs, you cannot go wrong with a round ball. I use a 60 grain charge (volume) of 3f or equivalent sub, and it just smokes deer sized critters. I do like those Buffalo Ballets, but it has been about 20 years since they have been produced, so once your out, your done...

    Educate me on Petersoli please

I have the exact rifle that you are asking about, and I am very pleased with it. Mine is in .54, with a striped maple stock. A couple of minor complaints is the cheap ram-rod that comes from the factory. That is easily remedied by buying an aftermarket hickory one, available from multiple...

Patched Ball Accuracy in Repro Springfield Rifled Muskets

I don't have repros, but I do have several original rifled muskets. Patched round balls (.570) shoot very accurately in my rifles, using the standard 60 grain service charge. However, they impact very high above the point of aim, about 24" at 50 yards, compared to about 5" high with standard...

Lymans great planes rifle barrel, want more twist.

A short conical will shoot fine in a 1 in 60" twist. That being said, a .50 caliber round ball, with proper charge, will easily kill an elk at traditional muzzleloading distances.

    Thoughts on Percussion Caps

The Academy near me has caps for $9.99 per 100. However, all the Walmarts in my area currently have CCI #11's for $5.62 a tin. I picked up quite a few at that price, but was not that guy who took all of them to sell at the gun show or online for $30-$40 a pop.

    Civil war era rifle?

Save a few extra bucks and get an original, you will never regret that decision. Like others have said, you can get a nice shooting original for a few hundred bucks more than a Italian repro. I am also firmly convinced that a Springfield or Special Contract musket is mechanically superior to a...

    Lee REAL bullets

I use the the Lee REAL bullet in several of my .54's. Two have 1 in 66" twist (Pedersoli RMH and Frontier) the other has 1 in 48" (Investarms Hawken). In my guns, the REAL bullets shoot very well, indistinguishable performance between those and roundballs, including group size and POI. I use...

Why I would recommend someone not get into muzzleloading

Just got 2,000 CCI #11's for under $6 a tin. There are caps available, as I found several outlets that had caps in stock. A fella better move fast though and not dawdle, and buy as many as you can reasonably afford.

Does anyone even do this anymore?

I always snap a cap until I see evidence of the blast exiting the barrel, usually a leaf or something. However, I got a lot of caps that I have spent 40+ years accumulating. When I needed a tin, I bought 3 or 4 for about $2 a pop. Glad I made that decision!

    .54 charge workup

To answer one of the questions in the original post, a .530 or .535 round ball at 1300 fps is fine for deer sized game out to 100 yards or so. I have read in old books (please do not ask for a citation from an obscure book that i read 40+ years ago!) that the old timers loaded with just enough...

Triple Seven seems to have solved my misfiring problem, but now what should I do with my Pyrodex?

I have used Pyrodex almost exclusively for 45+ years in a large variety of muzzleloaders, both long guns and handguns. I have NEVER had a failure to fire, or even a hesitation, when the cap ignited. My one and only hang fire came using 777 in a rifle. Was shooting a 3 shot group from the...

Powder charge. How much powder do you use.

I use 60 grains of 3F (real black or sub, don't care) in about everything from. 40 to .58 caliber. Does whatever I want it to do, from punching targets to punching deer and bear. In my smoothbores, 20 gauge and up, I use 70 to 80 grains of 2F, and 25% more shot by volume. If I was hunting...

    Shot some Pyrodex today

I have used Pyrodex extensively in all my guns, with the exception of flintlocks, of course. When I got my first muzzleloader, a percussion Charles Daly/Investarms .54 "Hawken" in 1976, it came with a can of Pyrodex P powder, a tin of caps, 100 unlubed patches that I smeared with Crisco, and a...
