What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I enjoyed your lovely story immensely. Die drei themen woodcraft, muzzleloading and quantum theory, three favorite subjects that could not have been better crafted to hold my attention. Thank you for sharing your nicely crafted surreal short story.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Finished another shooting bag. Something a wee bit different this time. A belt bag instead of a shouldered bag. Bag is made of bison hide with deerskin binding and interior pocket, Irish linen stitching.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Loja man, The seams and stitching would likely be adequate to hold the lining in place. However, I build my bags to be as durable and long lasting as possible and so I apply a very thin layer of Barge leather glue to bind the entirety of the liner to the leather. That creates a lamination...

    wife remembrance

"Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies". Proverbs 31:10 You are a lucky man to have been blessed with a good woman. My condolences on your great loss.

My first ever combustible envelope cartridges

Nice! They look far better than my first attempt.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

This morning I made my first attempt at constructing paper cartridges. They came out looking uglier than homemade sin. With a bit more experience I feel confident I can roll better specimens that my Uberti Walker won't be too embarrassed to consume.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Completed another bag this evening. Cowhide body, deerskin pockets, Irish linen thread. No winter induced cabin fever for me. I stay plenty busy with these projects. Beats watching tv.... or maybe not. How would I know, I don't own one. 😁

    No muzzleloading pepperbox reproductions?

I would love to have a faithful quality repo of an Ethan Allen Pepperbox. They look like fun little "rib ticklers". When used as intended they were probably quite serviceable, at say riverboat card table distances.

Just when you think you've seen it all

"Simplicity is the essence of elegance." Sophia Loren I'm of the same mind as Sophia on this matter. Fancy, cluttered or tarted up do not float my stick. Sleek lines, balanced form and unadorned curves trips my trigger. Think an SMR stocked in walnut, sans patch box, or young Ava Gardner in a...

    Authentic Mountain Man Experience?

It may be true that the trappers were wasteful at times, but some if not all must have been aware of the sin of wastefulness. Well, at least one of them for sure was aware. "It is a shame to kill one of those large fat cows for two men's supper." Osborne Russell (Journal of a Trapper) 1834-1843

    Authentic Mountain Man Experience?

pab1, thanks for sharing your nice pics of one of my favorite critters. Moose are fairly regular visitors to my cabin along with black bears, brown bears, elk, deer, the occasional mountain lion and a host of more diminutive critters, but the moose are a special treat. This cow strolled by just...

    First crude horn

Very nice! Definitely superior to my first effort at a powder horn.

    First try at a bag.

First effort or not, that is a real nice bag your son should be proud to own and use. It will grow ever nicer with the wear that comes with use. Brokennock is correct about the stitch advice. Think of the perforated "tear along the dotted line" that appears at the top of a book of checks. A...

Colt Walker vs Dragoon more fun to shoot?

I favor my walker over my other C&P revolvers. Primarily because I just find it to be a bit more fun than the others and secondarily because of a familial connection. I have a direct descendant who was one of the early Texas Rangers, and though I don't know for certain, there is a greater than...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

So, I have a nice german optic 25X spyglass that resides in my possibles bag. Problem is it has a shinny blue leather cover. No es histórico! Well, I fixed that by making a more appropriate cover for the spyglass. Now it looks more at home with the other early 19th century gear in my possibles bag.

What to do with a hair on moose hide?

Rug or wall hanger perhaps. I use bison hides as rugs in my cabin. I don't know if moose hide is durable enough for a rug but it seems a waste to cut up a full moose hide for items that can be made just as well from smaller critters.
