Ever use iron nitrate on walnut?

I've used nitric acid on walnut with good success. I would not use anything fortified with iron though.

    Cleaning with removable chokes

Clean the bores with the screw chokes in but move the IC over to the other barrel when you are ready to clean it. Clean the chokes themselves out of the gun.

    LOP question...........

Hard to measure for length of pull. There is not trick like elbow to bent trigger finger. Go with what's comfortable in clothes that will be used when shooting and the other more precise measurements are determined from there.

    Ready to Stain! Woodsrunner.

Aqua fortis is nitric acid as stated above. The term was added as a title to some of thr commercially bottled concoctions and it stuck. All gunmakers didn't dissolve iron in it either to color their stocks. Here is a maple stock done about 25 years ago in nitric that was cut with crik water, NO...

Anyone else have sore raw fingertips

You need a sharp stitching awl and harness needles. I can stitch a thick modern holster with same. No need for modern Asian punch thru chisels or the like. Drilling removes leather and creates non-closable holes. Sometimes you may need a pair of pliers with smooth jaws to pull a needle on...

Will this leather work for a cows knee?

Give it a try. It will naturally soften on its own but still retain its shape to fit.

Will this leather work for a cows knee?

We have a modern inclination that good veg tan needs to be soft and floppy like a lot of chrome tanned stuff we see these days. 2-3 oz vegetable tanned is fine for this application and if you wet form it, you will have a perfect fit to your lock and gun. There is no need to prematurely wear out...

$1,000 budget (set on stone): What should I recommend?

I would agree if the cap contained an amount to get something worth having in comparison to a adding a little more. If not, time to re-consider the amount cap due to more acquired knowledge. Ignorance (lack of knowledge, not stupidity) of pricing vs quality is not a good reason to stick so hard...

    Shooting a long Fowler!

The last "queen anne" I saw up close, my friend was using one on a left handed Englishb birding piece. He had to forge ALL new springs for it as well as bush the tumbler hole and ream for a decent fit. Of course he is very precise and picky and will not stand for slop.
