    Extract bullet without powder charge

You can dribble in 10+ grains of powder when you remove the nipple. Replace the nipple, and seat the bullet down on the powder. It should come right out when the gun is fired, if not, dribble in 15+ grains, reseat the bullet and try again. If at the range or home you could use a CO2...

    Fouling Shot before Hunting

I would give that bore a good scrubbing with JB bore paste and a green scotch brite pad then see if the cold bore shots group closer to the fouled shots. If that doesn't work, try using a felt wad over the powder before loading the PRB.

    Best Shot You Ever Had

I would have to say it was a shot taken at a trail walk for extra bonus points. The target was an egg suspended from a tree limb at 100 yards. The shot was taken off hand with a T/C Renegade .50 caliber using a PRB. I couldn't do it again if I tried, it was purely luck, but I took the praise...

    I like short staters

The ones I make are similar to Hanshi's, but I drill out one end to use as a powder measure for the gun the starter goes with.

    Patch material/methods

I use a loading block when hunting, but for trail walks and range use I use pre-lubed strips that I roll up and put into one of the old aluminum screw top 35mm file containers that I cut a slot in to feed the lubed strip out of. The cap of the aluminum container has a screw eye that I use with...

    Pitting where powder charge sits

I have a original 1843 half stock .35 caliber percussion gun that the breech area where the powder sits is severely corroded. I couldn't get the gun to hit a 8.5 X 11" paper at 25 yards as the patches were shredding. I found that if I put a 1/8" felt wad over the powder, then seated the...

Soft lead 'air gun' ammo in a muzzleloader?

What caliber was the air gun that Lewis & Clark brought with them up the Missouri on their trek to the NW coast?

does pitting in chamber area seriously affect accuracy?

I have a vintage .35 caliber rifle in which the "chamber area" was badly eroded from a load being left in it for over 100 years. My first shots with this gun would give me about 3.5" groups at 25 yards, and patches were shredding. I tried loading with a 1/4" felt wad over the powder, and then...

Soft lead 'air gun' ammo in a muzzleloader?

I made a .22 caliber BP rifle using a .22 RF barrel. I shoot 30 grain Air Rifle slugs (not pellets) in it using 5 grains of 4F black powder. It is my novelty squirrel gun and teaching aid for beginning black powder shooters in the Boys Club. I do not shoot pellets because i found that the...

    Pillow ticking thickness

I use JoAnns pocket drill for my patches. It is very strong, and 100% cotton. Most of the stuff I have miked in the store run between .014-.018".

    First time doing woods walk

Many have already mentioned items you may need. I like to bring a small tool wallet with nipple wrench (if percussion gun), touch hole and nipple pick, ball puller (cause everyone dry balls sometime), patch puller, extra flints & leather, flint knapper, ram rod puller, (for those stuck jags...

    Can't budge Renegade front sight

A while ago I ran into the same problem, a very tight front sight. I used my air hammer with a staight steel bit with a brass cap on the end so as not to mark up the barrel should I slip. Worked slick as owl poop.

Limits of Hard Cast Roundball when hunting

Where I hunt the cover (read laurel) is very thick. Shots at deer take place at spitting distance out to 85 yards in some openings. I also do not like to track a wounded deer in this stuff as it means crawling on hands and knees in many if not all cases as a wounded deer generally heads into...

Sights recommended for 45 cal rifle

I would double check those dovetail slots. Many of the european guns have a .360 dovetail instead of the .375 found on American made guns.

How do I load a .32 rifle for small game?

I have a percussion and flint lock in .32. Both seem to shoot 20 grains of 3f very well out to 50 yards. Velocity is about the same as a .22 RF high velocity load (1500 FPS) The standard .310 ball weighs the same as a standard .22 RF at 40 grains. The .32 will do everything that a .22 RF...

    Wad use with prb

I use a felt wad over the powder in my Great Great Great Grandfathers 35 caliber rifle. The bore in the breech area of this gun is corroded and rough due to a powder charge being left in the gun for over 100 years. When I first tried shooting the gun (after removing the unfired load and ball)...
