Ideal single trigger pull weight ?

The guns I’ve built all have less than 4 lb triggers. Depending on intended use sometimes less. None less than 2.5 lb. due to possible winter use. I don’t do set triggers, I feel they are a safety problem waiting to happen. BJH

    White lightning replacement

The do, however the white lightning liner is normally custom fitted. On factory guns like Your CVA there are standard factory replacement liners plus possibly aftermarket parts. BJH

    Your Flintlock History

I built my first muzzloading rifle from a TC Hawken kit, back around ‘78. Shot that a couple years, then I felt I need a better gun. And started scratch building the next gun. Once again many, many guns later. I’m building yet another gun better suited for my present needs. What a rabbit hole...

    White lightning replacement

I’d say your past due for replacement. You may need a gun builder to change it however. Often the the liner is long enough to protrude into the bore of the gun interfering with cleaning and must be shortened and chamfered. Or intercepts the breech face and causes issues. But the point remains it...

Kibler barrel lug drilling/ relief cuts...

It depends a lot on the stability of the pieces of wood. I’ve had soft curly wood that “grew “ 1/16 or more from winter to summer. I had to slot the lugs wider progressing from the rear to the front with the front having the longest slot. Though I never had another move that much since. I also...

    Apply wax in barrel channel?

All the guns I’ve built and own, have several heavy coats of stock finish in the barrel channel and under the but piece. The lock mortise gets its share too. The barrel at final assembly gets a healthy film of RIG grease. All over. I’m wary of the over greasing thing as oils and grease can and...

Paper cartridges in a rifled gun?

Because I prefer to use materials available in the period of use, thus ruling out plastic tubes. Of course wooden apostles, or river cane tubes could be used. Really in period they would have used a horn, there’s overwhelming evidence of that. The context of the paper cartridges I describe is...

Paper cartridges in a rifled gun?

One of the reasons I worked out my system is: No matter how careful you are about making a really good first shot sooner or later you won’t. Plus we have a timed second shot on a target on our woods walk. Well, I guess two reasons. BJH

What causes this line to mess up my rust blue?

Definitely oil seepage. Sorry fought that battle before. Now I clean everything with electric motor cleaner before assembling and use blue lock tight on the threads sparingly. Haven’t had a issue since. BJH

Paper cartridges in a rifled gun?

I’ve also used and promoted this system of prompt reloading. I use paper tubes made from post it papers. For powder. And a bullet board or block. And a short starter. After loading my first ball I leave the starter in the hole in the block, putting it in my shot bag peg up. When I need to reload...

How many muzzleloaders have you built

During my years in association with Fred Miller. I built a bunch of guns each year from his seconds stocks that would have been kindling as most people would not have the skills or desire to mess with. The completed guns were sold at the spring and fall shoots at Friendship and other events. It...

To all who gave me idea's

There those who have had to pull a ball and those who will. GBG! That being said our club has a forked piece of angle iron screwed to a overhead rafter at our range. Useing that coupled with a good steel range rod and ball pulling screw, ive never seen a ball not successfully pulled. By pulling...

    Coning

I’m in agreement with LC here. Most of my guns have conventional crowns. I own two that are coned. One that was done by Getz barrel co. One done by me useing a lathe and four jaw chuck with a carefully ground boring tool. All my guns shoot as good as conditions and my eyesight allow. I still use...

    Breech plug issue

If it were mine i wound be not concerned a 5/8 breech plug in a 54 cal.barrel will need to seal at the end of the threads not so much at the shoulder as it’s almost nonexistent any way. When fitting you need to feel the plug scrunching at the end of the threads, as Don Getz explained to me...

Reaming and rifling a wrought iron barrel.

A lot of early rifles were 1-48 regardless of caliber. My own modern .36 cal rifle is 1-48 twist. BJH

reclaiming lead from car and motorcycle batteries

Yes that is what DEKA uses for their batteries for spare connectors. I got that information from their literature. I believe Enersys uses the same alloy, it handles the same. BJH
