    White Lightening Touch Hole Removal

Sorry about those capitalized letters--they're just easier on my eyes. To answer the question of why I'm replacing it--someone over-drilled the existing unit. I like 1/16" flash holes. This ole boy looks like a well burnt out musket hole. Anyway, many thanks for your recommendations.

    White Lightening Touch Hole Removal

I NEED TO INSTALL A NEW WHITE LIGHTENING TOUCH HOLE UNIT. THE OLD ONE WAS FILED FLUSH WITH THE BARREL AND THERE'S NO SCREWDRIVER SLOT TO WORK WITH. HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE ORIGINAL MAKER DID TO SEAL THE THREADS. WHAT'S THE BEST APPROACH TO NEATLY REMOVING THE EXISTING UNIT? THANKS, YOU ALL!

Round Groove vs Square Groove Barrels

In the world of flintlocks, we constantly run into round and square groove barrels. It has been my experience that square groove barrels, on the average, are more accurate and easier to work up a patch/ball combination for. Round groove barrels are said to be easier to clean but I've never...

How to make Teflon shooting patches

It certainly seems to be the patch of choice for national level competitors. The Teflon patching is still being advertised in Muzzleblasts.

    Duplex BH209 in SideLock

What are your duplex proportions? Doesn't BH209 specifically say their product is to be used in a closed breech system only?

    2-Band Rear Sight Windage Adjustment

Thank you, Gus. That's a very helpful remedy, especially your recommendation on welding up the existing notch. Years ago Lyman offered a bendable, metal bracket that could be secured to the rear tang screw and then came up along the breech of the musket. There it was tapped for their Model 57...

How to make Teflon shooting patches

When shooters are using Teflon patches, do they clean between shots? In short, does Teflon build up in the barrel?

    2-Band Rear Sight Windage Adjustment

That was an excellent post on installing a higher front sight on the Enfield musket. Any ideas for adding windage adjustment to the rear military Enfield musket sight?

    Need Longer Nipples

This is more of an across-the-board problem than we have addressed. Many of the "modern made" nipples have a cone height that is minimal (read that as too darn short--particularly in antique percussions)because there IS no standard for that dimension. The AMPCO nipples typically have longer...

Reliable Source For ML Quality Linen?

Does anyone have actual knowledge of a reliable source for closely woven linen +-0.014 for patching. I've used the internet. Got some great Irish linen 3 years ago from Denver Fabrics. Closely woven, 0.014" then went to reorder and they've had nothing approaching that quality ever sense. Most...

Loads For The Pedersoli Le Page Pistol

Thank you one and all. I'm thinking along the lines of a milder load. I started with 20 grs., then 25 grs and finally 30 grs. The 30 gr. load was by far the most accurate. I'll drop down to 15 grs. and see how well I shoot it. I may also drop down to a .429 ball with a thicker patch until...

Loads For The Pedersoli Le Page Pistol

I'm currently loading a .433 ball with a .011 linen patch lubed with Shenandoah over 30 grs. of Swiss 3F. It's a super accurate load but I'm getting patch cutting. Do any of you Le Page shooters have a favorite load that does not produce cut patches?

Pedersoli Le Page Rear Sight Adjustment

ALSO, square up the notch and open it slightly for a much clearer sight picture.

    Minie in smoothbores??

What really works--and I mean accurately--is Lyman's 20 gauge, sabot slug. Dropped from the mould it has a diameter of 0.576", weighs 350 grs. and looks exactly like a big diablo airgun pellet with a hollow base. Use 60-70 grs of 2 or 3F, a 1/8" nitro wad over the powder followed by a greased...

Could you please post a picture of the Morse rifle. Is this the Confederate design or something that just goes by the name Morse? Thanks.

    Powder Types

Black MZ is a superior alternative to BP and other substitutes in percussion guns. Blackhorn 209 is specifically formulated for in-lines and CF cartridges. It does contain a trace of sulfur so you must clean up as if you were shooting real BP

    JB Bore Paste

I use it with success to smooth out a bore that may have spots in it that seem to attract fouling also for giving a brand new barrel a very slight polish. Have also used SIMICHROME POLISH with success to polish a new barrel. Remember--all modern custom barrel makers lead lap their barrels with...

Hey, that's a very credible crack at carving on the butt. Really nice design and neatly executed. Congratulations! Can't wait to see #2, #3--#30

    Flash Cup?

I've found just the opposite. Unmodified flash cups tend to direct gas back into the shooter's forehead. They also don't allow the nipple to completely seat in the threads so that fouling accumulates in the lower threads of the nipple seat. I found that filing out a semi-circle shaped notch on...
