    Help with bison horn

I think any oil- like old motor oil. BE CAREFUL the horn can turn to a glob if you boil too long.

    Scraping up some advice

Okay, I don't know a lot about scrapers but on a thin metal scraper, I thought to file at 90 degrees and then use a burning rod back and forth which raises a burr on one edge and that is what cuts/removes wood. If so, then a metal scraper would be best. FALSE economy, spent $800 plus making a...

    Scraping up some advice

If the rings are hard and soft on the wood you can dig out more in the soft sections which can create a corduroy effect. As others, I scrape to mostly reduce wood and then go to sandpaper. They still scrapers at specialty tool sources.

    Help with bison horn

My experience is buffalo is more fibrous and boiling in water works fine. Cow horn is more like a finger nail and oil is needed, water doesn't work (or hasn't for me). On the buffalo- you can accidentally push it into a cone too hard and when it dries you'll get a ring or bulge so fit it loose...

Planning a Fall Road trip. I want to see Fort Ligonier but I think there are some other good places to see in the area. I thought there was a village of craftsmen that made powder horns, etc. Maybe a few merchants specializing in muzzle loading. In any event I live in Florida and want to see...

    45 caliber barrel

Well, I'm a PRB only shooter. If I want something powerful, just use a modern rifle.

    Slotting pin lugs

It seems to me that the wood in the stock is weak and thin, the important thing is the depth of the slot to insure the the two (barrel and stock are snug, so a slot that allows only horizontal shifts due to a hot barrel, etc.

    Slotting pin lugs

I see no harm in slotting since the idea to to hold the barrel down on the stock. Even if the slotting helps in a stock shrinking with age, etc.= a little slotting seems worthwhile. I think a barrel might go over 100 degrees on a hot day- not sure. On some rifles I solder a rib to the barrel...

The Winning of the West- from Alleghenies to Mississippi

I'm just finishing this book, actually the volume is four book published by Skyhorse 2015. 791 pages. It deals with Kentucky, Tennessee, and the Old Northwest- (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois) from just before the American Revolution up to about 1800. There is a certain amount of story telling but...

    Chain fire!!

Thanks Dale- first time I've run across anyone who confirmed balls can move forward from recoil. My thinking is the explosion still forces the ball forward but since it's already beyond the chamber, it lacks power and doesn't do much damage.

    45 caliber barrel

What is the smallest size (flat to flat straight barrel for a 45 caliber? There are dovetails to cut, etc. and there needs to be enough room. 15/16" 7/8" 13/16"?

    Chain fire!!

It would be interesting if anyone had a chain firing from a combustible cartridge or using a conical bullet. If not, then I'd look toward the round ball moving forward. As stated, I think a chain firing can happen in more than one manner.

    Chain fire!!

I've only had one, I don't think it was the first round for the day, maybe I fired about 18 rounds. Chamber to the right of the chamber in line, no damage. Strange sound caused me to look things over. Powder, wad, ball. I don't shave lead (.375) but balls always seem to fit tight. Caps don't go...

    Push Dagger

I have a short piece of good steel- I was going to make a slip joint pocket knife but it is a lot of work- maybe I'll try a push dagger. Any idea how these were carried? Some sort of sheath?

    Chain fire!!

Was that the first round of the day? I've been trying to keep a record of these incidents and it seems very often the chain fire starts right at the start of the day, that is, the first round fired. Why is the question? I then tried to figure out if the gun, the last time it was cleaned, had...

    Breech plug install ??

Indeed, the only way I would do it is before the dovetails are cut for sights, etc.

    Source of Thick Steel

I think the auto/truck springs are about it, the lawn mower blade I think would be too thin.
