    Most affordable smoothbore kit

Get a rifle kit with an easily removable breech plug (ie, NOT a CVA percussion where it is all drilled together with the drum etc. as well) Build it up and keep an eye out for a second barrel, of if kit cheap enough just buy 2 to start with. Have second barrel drilled out to reasonable...

    Powder Inc.

What I like about Powder Valley is that when you put an item in your cart it is in inventory and guaranteed to you for 20 minutes I've lost/missed on so many things between "add to cart" and "pay now" ... I really appreciate that feature of their site, both as a customer and as a developer and...

Online source for just one pound of fffg black powder

There are regional forums down below... when I first joined, I posted and was able to find someone else local to me that wanted a pound ... I wanted two... got with another buddy of mine who reloads and he added some powder... ended up ordering 10lbs of various powders, split the hazmat/shipping...

Any SxS trap shooters out there?

Havent read thru the whole thread.... But have you patterned the gun? And seen where the shot is landing in relation to the bead and your point-of-point (you point shotguns, not aim them right?) I ask because a buddy was going nutz with his Pedersoli trying to do some turkey hunting. He...

Are all CVA Synthetic Stocks Hollow?

If anything I'd add some weight to the back of mine - my 2 CVA percussions are very front-heavy. As for storage, possible good idea, but I gotta say that on my various modern things that have buttstock or pistol grip storage the only ones I've ever used have been the speed-feed stock on my...

    Is this inevitable?

One of my modern guns is known for tossing brass against the side of the receiver and marking it up. On those forums, we have a saying - "Brass kisses mean you love your rifle and actually use it instead of leaving it in the safe"

Difference in patterning between lead and bismuth/tin shot?

Unsure about bismuth, but I know that "steel" shot (soft iron actually) will tend to pattern a bit tighter than lead if all else is equal because of less shot deformation as it squeezes thru choke etc. I also know that there were some experiments done with square-cut lead shot that would really...

    Tow Alternatives

If you are interested in using moss I have lots of Spanish moss (not really a moss, it is actually a flowering plant...) available near me. Be happy to stuff a few handfuls in an envelope and send it off.... Send me a PM.

    2024 Turkey Hunting

Other than small game 30 years ago Ive not hunted due to lack of a place to do it other than some local WMAs that used to get insane Finally met up with a guy and got into the woods he has. Deer move thru there at crack of dawn and that is it. Turkeys all over the place, so that is what I...

    2024 Turkey Hunting

We have both Fall and Spring turkey here in Florida. Unfortunately, I got to spend the 2 week muzzle loader season dealing with covid and recovering.... But I scored a bird about an hour into opening day of general gun (using my trusty Mossberg 500). Had planned on hunting during ML season...

    Caps v primers

Think it is more along the lines of how the product is used... Caps, you are grabbing 'em one by one with your fingers (and then maybe loading a tool or something to hold a few, or just applying directly) Primers you are likely flipping them over onto a tray that will go into a priming tool...

    Modifying a Maxi-Ball

My maxis leave the barrel at .54" ... you could say they come pre-expanded. As said, I see no need for expansion. A big heavy hard-as-feasible cast bullet with a large metplat has been a proven Stopper of All Things for a long long time from front stuffers to BP cartridge guns to modern stuff.

    Substitute caps

Tried the plastic red 8 in a ring caps on my .54 percussion. They went pop, but jammed plastic down into the flash channel etc. and I wasn't able to get a charge to go off. You are saying a few specks of fine BP right in the nipple, then the plastic cap and it will set off a charge...

    Anyone use these on pistols?

I use 5ml flip top test/sample tube vials from amazon, put 30gr in them. One per cylinder hole on the pistol, two or three per shot on the 54 rifle.

    Smoothbore shotgun for turkey

If you've got deeper pockets than I do, I would look at a jug choke for whatever you end up with. Barrel is 12ga down near the ignition/powder well, opens up to 10ga or so and then a screw on external tube choke goes on and tightens it back down to .725ish for an extra-full turkey choke...

    Too much powder?

Unsure on cornmeal, but grits add nothing to the smell... or detract from it :) As far as loading.... a bit of preparedness lets you have tubes or other small containers preloaded with powder, shot, and grits. Or dispense from a horn or other container into measure just like you would with...
