Failed to fire, how to best extract or remove .50 sabot and 100 grain load?

Correct. Best to only use loose black powder or substitute. Or do a 5 grain charge of loose, then the pellets on top of that if you want to use them up. Combined, don't exceed max charge for safety of course.

    couple of questions

I use a fresh one every year, rather than using the same one for years and years to the point of it being a crumbling mess. If that ever does happen, I'll be walking out of the woods with my head on a swivel, watching for a tree to fall over and possibly hit me too. I find the chance of that...

    Renegade Round Ball question.

I find that my cap lock .54 Renegade likes a pretty tight patch/ball combo and very light lube on the patch. Mine also absolutely likes to be swabbed between shots. I do one damp patch pass and then one dry patch pass between shots. I can get away with swabbing every other shot before groups...

    Other than Hoyt......

Thanks for that. I live in Lewiston and had no idea this place existed.

    couple of questions

I simply use a foam hearing protection ear plug over the nipple. They are cheap and I keep two or three in my shooting bag just in case I lose one. When hunting, I put a cap on and just set the hammer to half. But if there is rain or snow, I will put the ear plug over the cap and set the...

    Commercial RB hardness?

I can't speak for Hornady, but can say that Speer RB's are for sure swaged using pure, soft lead.

    load question

It can vary depending on the actual bore diameter and how deep the rifling is. It is not just simply getting a RB and patch thickness that add up to the bore diameter. For example, my .54 TC needs a much thicker patch than just a .010" with a .530 ball. They tend to be a bit over advertised...

.54 Cal TC Renegade 1:48 Twist, Patched Roundball Accuracy Test

What they said, go to a JoAnnes or somewhere like that with a c-mic or calipers and do some measuring. You want 100% cotton, no blends. I use patch material in the .018" range, I can usually find some blue stripe pillow ticking that will meet that requirement. Pocket drill is often a bit...

Gun Works Muzzleloading Emporium Sporter #2

They have been in business for quite a while and I've only read good things about them. For a while they were the go to for TC sidelock parts, as they bought out TC's parts inventory when they stopped sidelock business. I broke a sear a few years ago and they were the only place I found one...

Preparing a percussion rifle for hunting

The above storage/oil suggestions are good. If you are getting a rust preventative oil into the flash channel, that may be the culprit for sure. I use Barricade, I like it because it dries to a film. I do a light coating after cleaning and drying and then store the rifle muzzle down for a...

    Percussion nipples

When you swab between shots you are pushing fouling down into the patent breech. I've had that trouble as well, I always swab between shots too. It doesn't happen every time you swab, but the more you shoot the more it seems to start happening. Especially on a damp day when there is a lot of...

WANTED looking for a TC Renegade Tumbler.

You might contact The Gun Works Muzzleloading Emporium and see if they have one. They bought all of TC's stock of parts when they quit the sidelock side of things.

    TC New Englander puzzle

It is very strange that it is the SECOND shot after swabbing that won't go off. If cleaning/swabbing the bore was pushing fouling into the patent breech and blocking the flame channel, then why would the first shot go off after swabbing but then the second shot is the one that gives a fail to...

    Horrible accuracy after 3 shots

That's what I've always attributed it to. I have tried patches so thick that I dang near need a mallet to start them and it still won't maintain fouling consistency enough to shoot them the same. I usually will swab with one damp pass and one dry, but even just one pass with the damp swab makes...

    My $250 Renegade

My .54 caplock Renegade with a PRB has quite a bit of an accuracy improvement between 70 grains and 75 grains of powder. At 75 grains groups are almost half what they are at 70 grains with 2f, with 3f it isn't quite as big of a difference but still quite an improvement. With a .015" patch my...

    Horrible accuracy after 3 shots

I have a .54 TC Renegade that shoots exactly the same. It will put the first two touching, third will be a bit left of them, from fourth shot on they go to parts unknown...if I don't swab. Swab it at least every other shot and it'll shoot groups you'd show to your buddies without hesitation...

    Hornady .535" round ball users

The swaged RB's I've seen made (not Hornady but process must be very similar), they form each half of the RB separately and then the two "half moons" are swaged together to make the whole RB. Two half moons of lead are joined to create a round sphere/ball. After this process you can see that...

proper powder load for 54 cal?

My .54 Renegade shot PRB only so-so at 70 grains of 2f. When I tried 75 grains groups cut in half. 80 and 85 grains they were about the same, at 90 grains they started to open up a bit again. With 3f 80 grains was my most accurate charge. Find the charge yours likes best. You already know...

    Questions about my Hawken shoot

Check that the spring under the rear sight is there and not broken or bound up somehow. Like the others said, you should be able to push down on it and have it return back to where the adjustment allows it to raise up to. It is also possible that someone changed the front sight and it is...

    Tried Balistol / Water today

I had the same thing with mink oil. When I first bought some I rather generously lubed up several patches with it, nice and thick like you see the pre-lubed store bought patches look. They didn't shoot very good at all for me and I actually put the mink oil away for several months and just...
