    NEW TC HAWKEN PROBLEM

I think you read this the way I also took it at first glance...as if he was pulling it by driving the pickup. I believe he is just anchoring the ramrod to the bumper for a stationary object and then pulling on the rifle to get the load out. As I'm sure someone with your experience is very aware...

what a difference 5 grains makes!

It's surprising how much 5 grains can be all the difference with BP. When I first started developing a PRB load I was using 2f and started at 60 grains, worked my way up 5 grains at a time (.54 TC). I can remember thinking I must not have that accurate of a barrel those first few groups. Then...

    Conversion?

On a side note, I've heard that "fouling" the bore by popping a few 209 primers can eliminate the clean bore shot being out of the group of subsequent fouled bore shots. Always wanted to test this but haven't ever got around to tracking down a 209 conversion to buy for my Renegade. This was...

    Barricade?

I've used several different things as a rust preventative. I've been using Barricade for several years now, I decided to stick with Barricade (several other preventatives worked fine for me too) simply because it dries to a film and I can leave it in the bore when hunting and still have some...

    Breaking in a new barrel?

It has been reported that some barrels cut patches when new. I personally would shoot it and see what kind of accuracy you get before making a decision. If accuracy is good I wouldn't even bother looking for spent patches. If accuracy isn't real great, then gather some spent patches and see...

Love the barrel hate the sights

The front sight is simply a 3/8 dovetail. Tons and tons of offerings out there in many different heights. I'd buy one around .500" high, move the rear sight to the middle of it's range, and then file the front as needed to get a 50 yard zero (my preference).

    45 PRB load

Here's something to try with the maxi-balls. Sometimes that large upper grease groove doesn't strip all of the lube before it exits the bore, leading to poor concentricity and thus poor accuracy. Try shooting them with the large upper groove empty and just lube in the lower, narrower groove. I'd...

    Antler tool

Here’s some pics of the few antler tools I’ve made. Plus my crude attempt at decorating them freehand with a dremel. A pic of an elk antler powder measure that holds 100 grains of 2f for my conical load, and a pic of the short starter I talked about above plus an elk antler field flask I made...

    percussion caps

They'll work just fine on any #11 nipple like said above. About the only difference you may notice is that they can tend to blow apart so much that they get stuck in the hammer cup. On my Renegade they get stuck more than they don't in my experience. Probably has a lot to do with cup to nipple...

    Lubed patch in the field

I just keep lubed patches in a tin when doing a club shoot / woods walk. Our club shoots aren't timed and getting my patches from a tin hasn't caused me to hold up the line. I have a powder measure and capper hanging around my neck and my shooting bag holds a RB bag, short starter, palm saver...

    Antler tool

I like your idea, you'll have to let us know how well it works. I'm a fan of multi-use tools that help eliminate extra items in my hunting bag as much as possible. A couple years ago I made an antler handled short starter that also serves as a palm saver. I drilled the handle with a shallow...

    Hunting lube question

Damp type lubes may dry out completely or even leave a rust ring in the bore if it is left loaded for several days. They may also leech into the powder and foul some of it after sitting against it for so long. At the range it is fired out right away.

Has anyone tried using the TOTW lace on sling?

I have one that laces to the butt of the rifle but the front attaches with modern since TC Renegade has a threaded hole in one of the thimbles. I've had zero issue with the lace up portion coming loose. I wouldn't care for one if I had to use a loop on the barrel so it was in the way of my...

    Low spur hammer

Many also use the high spur hammer and low spur hammer to help date the rifle a bit. Older ones were high spur and "newer" ones around 1990 I believe all had low spur. Bubba would likely know better than I do.

    Problems with "Bore Butter"

I also find it hard to get out of the bore. I started out with BB pre-lubed patches from the store as well as a tube of Natural Loob 1000. It seems to cook into a very hard crust and requires a bunch of scrubbing with a brush to get out, and I still couldn't ever get completely clean patches...

    Roundball and bullet lube

I've made several batches of lube just using bee's wax and olive oil. Really depends on temps as to what ratio. I use 50/50 when using it in temps from 60 to 85 degrees F (I just don't care to shoot when it's hotter). For around 35°F to 55°F I like 1/3 bee's wax to 2/3 olive oil. If it's...

    Tc hawken replacement nipple

I'm also a fan of the Treso nipples. They last a really long time just shooting PRB. The first replacement nipple I put in my inherited .54 cal Renegade was a "standard" one from Track of the Wolf or the Possibles Shop. Within about two years it was opened up enough that the hammer was getting...

500 Yards, Stock 1:48 Twist TC Renegade .50 Cal

Nice shootin' Lew. I always like your videos showing what the stock 1:48 barrel is capable of in comparison to the fast twist Rice and GM barrels you put on some of them. I'm very much more of a PRB under a 100 yards type of guy with muzzleloaders but as a life long shooter I can certainly...

Ok, what is the best shot/shots you have seen or accomplished?

A couple years after getting into BP I was deer hunting with my .54 Renegade, 75 grains of Goex 2f and a PRB. Happened on a coyote mousing out in a good sized meadow. I dropped to one knee and started lip squeaking to try to get him closer than the 150 yards he was at. He came to about 90...

    Fiber wad ober powder question

An 1/8" wool wad is a good idea to help out accuracy, helps with leading some too. Another thought since you're using Maxi-balls. The upper grease groove is huge and some have discovered that it doesn't shed all of the lube out of it before it exits the barrel, making for poor concentricity...
