Low spur hammer

Saw this advertised for TC New Englander. What is a low spur hammer? How is it different from other percussion locks? Thanks.

I believe those were offered so a scope could be used and the hammer would not hit the scope.

I think I saw one of those on gunbroker the other day. Really weird looking. The hammer ran horizontally to the stock.

Early Hawken & Renegade hammers stuck straight up in what was referred to as a dolphin nose hammer. New Englanders and such (and later Hawkens/Renegades) had a slightly longer more sloped back hammer and I believe this may be the 'low hammer spur' referred to.

And then there was this long-ass contraption that looked like something to jack up a house that came straight back from the center hole 3 or 4 inches & was marketed as 'easy cocking' or some such.

Many also use the high spur hammer and low spur hammer to help date the rifle a bit. Older ones were high spur and "newer" ones around 1990 I believe all had low spur. Bubba would likely know better than I do.
