can blackpowder be dried out if wetted?

(Sigh) Trying NOT to get into black powder making ... while urine was used before the development of a chemical industry in the manufacture of gunpowder, it was NOT used directly. The several month PROCESS made saltpeter crystals, which were used. Urine is 91+% water, which would have leached...

    Swabbing between shots

A 100% cotton cleaning patch and spit between shots works for me. It also worked for Boone* (who didn't have Windex or Ballistol). * Ok, Boone probably used linen instead of cotton, but the point is you don't need fancy or exotic solutions to swab between shots!

can blackpowder be dried out if wetted?

LOL, Keep in mind that I am a chemist ... I can get it to 99+ % purity if I want to. And that is far purer than "it used to be." I could also do the analysis and calculate how much more was needed, if I had to. But I agree with you (and the forum rules) ... black powder making is for...

can blackpowder be dried out if wetted?

No. It takes some clever microorganisms to convert ammonia (NH3) to nitrate (NO3-). Easier to add more saltpeter (KNO3) to replace what leached out - only you don't know how much to add unless you do a chemical analysis or ... wing it and how for the best.

    blowing down barrel

I need to re-watch the movie ... Quigley blew down the barrel of a SHARPS ???? :shocked2: :youcrazy: As for Heston ... was that just before or after he parted the Green River to escape from the Blackfeet ?? Or am I confusing movies ... again ??? :haha: Just as long as we have a...

    blowing down barrel

In "The Muzzle-loading Cap Lock Rifle" by Roberts (1940), Roberts gives instructions on how the "old timers" taught him (as a young boy) to load, shoot and clean the rifle. This would have been shooters before the turn of the century that had been shooting from the 1860s or so. He also quotes...

    20ga load max

I said I TRIED that. It is not what I am sticking with. But see: Smoothbore Loads to find out why I tried that size load.

    20ga load max

Exactly ... it's all about finding your sight picture. For windage, if you have a turtle front sight like mine, you ain't gonna be moving it. I use the relationship between the sight and the tang screw (slot in screw is parallel to barrel to help with this) to adjust my left-right point of aim...

    Don't use wood ramrods!

I'm glad you weren't hurt !!! Why not make a nice run-out-free wooden rod, but also get a metal range rod ??? That way your rifle would look better, you would have a quality wooden rod for hunting, and the safety of the metal rod at your range.

    FFg or FFFg equivalent

I used 3F BP in my GPR many moons ago ... worked great !!! Now I use it in my flinters ... including my 20 ga smooth bore. STILL works great ... give it a try !!!

    .45 cal flintlock issues

Also make sure the frizzen isn't rebounding and hitting the flint on the rebound - you CAN'T see this !!! Put a piece of paper on the frizzen spring - it will have a dent from the frizzen tail if that is what is happening.

    20 gauge smoothy which powder

I'll say this again ... we aren't using the same barrel metal as they had back then ... any argument for or against 3F pressures needs to take modern barrel strength into account. According to one source: "Steel has been around for several hundreds of years. The first steels that were...

    20 gauge smoothy which powder

Not to mention that gun barrel composition has changed, too. Modern steels can take more pressure than the old iron barrels.

The rest of us know better. 3F in my 20 ga Chief's gun works just fine !!! Then there is this: Smoothbore loads

What type of filler do you use?

Ah ... that makes more sense to me. Maybe my thoughts were on my smoothbore Chief's gun, where I DO use wads (and a 0.610 ball) with no patch. I might give wads with a patch a try in my pistol.
