Is it not cricket to have a Craftsman toolbox as a shooter's

Ok. I asked this before ... is a wooden "shooting box" is HC ??? Can you show me an 1830's era one used in the Rockies by fur trappers ??? Except for at the modern range, everything I have and the way I do it IS period, as much as I can determine - it IS an ongoing process, of course. I...

Is it not cricket to have a Craftsman toolbox as a shooter's

PS My wooden chest also serves to sit on, it's that big and sturdy! Noted the name typo ... sorry Alden! Also to avoid confusion, I use the large modern Bostitch bag at the modern range, but my Leatherman hunting/possible bags everywhere.

Is it not cricket to have a Craftsman toolbox as a shooter's

Seriously ??? "Nobody, NOBODY, here has the right to cry holier-than-thou ..." ... unless they have a wooden shooting box and you don't, I suppose? Tell me, Arden, what is the use of a wooden shooting box on a public or private club range where almost everyone but you are shooting modern...

    Lock woes

The lock is under warranty, so I will let it go away for a while in hopes that Matt can cure the problem. I have faith that he can, but even if it persists, I will at least know that we tried. Worst case is I lose my gun for a while (so I will shoot my other flintlock instead), and have to...

Is it not cricket to have a Craftsman toolbox as a shooter's

Quotes by Thorstein Veblen: "The basis on which good repute in any highly organized industrial community ultimately rests is pecuniary strength; and the means of showing pecuniary strength, and so of gaining or retaining a good name, are leisure and a conspicuous consumption of goods."...

Is it not cricket to have a Craftsman toolbox as a shooter's

Exactly !!! BTW, can anyone give me a historical reference for a shooting box being used at the 1837 rendezvous (my time era) ???

Is it not cricket to have a Craftsman toolbox as a shooter's

Clyde - I would LOVE to do that. And that is what I did when I lived in the Black Hills and was in a BP club (High Plains Free Trappers). Here in this part of Iowa there are no BP clubs / fur trade reenactment groups that I can find - the closest one is in Des Moines (3 hours away). I have...

    Lock woes

Well, the gunsmith (Matt) figured it out !!! Although the frizzen APPEARS to stop halfway, it is actually REBOUNDING off the spring - if I hold a card on top of the frizzen spring, it opens fully. If the paper thin enough (or dented enough) it bounces back, but not all the way to the flint...

Is it not cricket to have a Craftsman toolbox as a shooter's

Just as silly ... "Atop a high meadow, I sat astraddle my gilded mule, and long time friend "Jackie". With snow blowing in from the north and east, I slide down from the saddle with my long rifle. I slide my fingers across the silver inlays of stars and moon, wishing for good luck. In the draw...

    Lock woes

That is, I didn't have the lock screws in at all - just held the lock into the stock with my fingers and it didn't work ! As you guys say, it MUST be something in the lock touching wood ... will have to try to find what is binding .... The gunsmith is also trying (long distance) to figure this...

    Lock woes

Thanks for the ideas, guys, but the lock works just fine out of the gun, so I don't see how either the flint type or frizzen screw could be a factor in this case. Seems to me that in both these cases the lock wouldn't work either in or out of the gun. Come to think of it, while trying to find...

Is it not cricket to have a Craftsman toolbox as a shooter's

Dang, Alden. I've been shooting black powder and going to 'vous for nigh on three decades, and here you tell me that I have been doing it all wrong 'cause I don't have a wooden shooting box !!! :youcrazy: Well, I'll get to the bottom of my list someday and get one, LOL.

Is it not cricket to have a Craftsman toolbox as a shooter's

PS If I was new to the hobby and I wanted to improve my historical appearance, a nice wooden shooting box would be near the bottom of the list, behind correct period clothing, correct period firearms and shooting accessories, and other accoutrements.

Is it not cricket to have a Craftsman toolbox as a shooter's

That's strange ... at our range, we can almost always find out who's "better" by the evaluation the target scores, LOL ! Don't get me wrong - there is nothing wrong with having a nice shooting box, but ... Alden seemed to be saying (in jest?) that if one was below average skill-wise that they...

    Lock woes

Oops - that should be 7/8" flint vs 1". Sorry for the typo! Yes, the flint is held nicely in leather. It doesn't move. I will keep your flint selection methods in mind! The 1" flint is definitely an emergency solution. Due to the strike position/angle there are fewer sparks and the flint gets...

    Lock woes

I have a new flintlock that has a unique problem (ok, at least one I have not seen before). With the recommended 5/8" (length) flint in (bevel up or down), the frizzen stops halfway open when in the gun - in other words, doesn't get moved far enough for the spring to open it fully. The flint is...
