    patch cutter advice?

Amen...here are some cotton duck after firing some sold brass balls...I normally use square pillow ticking patches cut from JoAnne Fabrics but needed some thicker material for the brass ball tests.

Obturation of a patched round ball...real or imagined?

That's been proven longer than you've been alive...however long muzzleloaders and PRBs have been in existence.

    Patent Breeches With Reduced Chambers

There is no such thing as a minimum powder charge to seat a ball. It is common practice to put a mere 5, 10, 15grns powder in under a dry ball to bloop it out.

    Patent Breeches With Reduced Chambers

To Repeat: "...then years of a few custom built Flintlocks, all of which I had custom Patent Breeches made for their Rice barrels..."

    Patent Breeches With Reduced Chambers

FWIW, here are some facts, not 3rd hand old wives tales: I've used nothing but Patent Breech sidelocks for the past 20+ years now...years of a few T/C Hawken caplocks, then years of a few T/C Hawken Flintlocks, then years of a few custom built Flintlocks, all of which I had custom Patent...

What's all this talk about Turkey Hunting ???

LOL.....finally hit the 2 week mark so it won't be long now...and got all the major projects and to-do's done so there won't be anything nagging at me. After being laid up December/January/half of February from darn near breaking my foot Thanksgiving week, I finally got out to the range...

Only 28 Days to Turkey opener here!

That's what drove me to investigate it. Initially I was focused on learning the basics of turkey hunting and taking them with some different Flintlock smoothbores, different barrels / chokes or not, different shot sizes, etc, for a few years. Then in the interest of taking as many types of game...

Only 28 Days to Turkey opener here!

My ego isn't big enough to try a head shot under low light hunting conditions in the woods, LOL. So far, I only used my 28ga smoothbore with a PRB on a longbeard just last spring...when he turned away from me and dropped his fan, I slipped the ball in from behind at the base of his fan, it...

What grit sandpaper for slate calls?

In fact, one I bought years ago actually included a section of material like those pads....happened to be brown but it was the same material

    .400 Bullet Mold?

You might PM member 'oldnamvet'...he had a custom .40cal mold made for a 200grn REAL conical. Did some range and field testing with him. Extremely accurate out of the .40cal Late Lancaster I used it in, took a beautiful 8 pointer with it, etc.

Only 28 Days to Turkey opener here!

The only restrictions for Turkey are: 1) Cannot use a RIFLE; 2) A shotgun / smoothbore cannot be larger than 10ga. 3) There are no restrictions on projectiles.

Hoping to repeat last spring’s hunt with a PRB out of my .54cal Early Virginia Smoothbore.

    Smoothbore Picture Thread. Please Post!

42" x .54cal and 38" x .62cal Early Virginia Smoothbores built by Matt Avance, TVM...outstanding in every respect with Rice barrels, Chambers Deluxe Siler locks, Davis Double set triggers. Have taken every game with each of them now that I ever took with modern rifles & shotguns...here are just...

    #4 or #6 shot..?

Rice 42"x 28ga wide open cylinder bore, using a full size 1/2" fiber OP wad...and yes, as the old saying goes: "Load powder, more lead, shoots far, kills dead" I bumped up to 70grns to open the pattern just a tad for doves...otherwise, things like squirrels are just small sitting targets and the...

    #4 or #6 shot..?

No, 100grn measure of 5's and 6's...1+3/8oz. 90grn measure of 7.5's...1+1/4oz. (You have to look close as the handwriting with felt tip pen is not as sharp as it could be in the photo) Sure, depending on the game and hunting situation...like most folks, I try to find/use powder charges, wad...
