I've never been happy with this gun...

Old post I know. But there is some good info in it and new shooters might benefit. Some 20+ years ago I built this Isacc Haines from a TOW kit. It has a 38" Colrain .54 caliber barrel with round bottom rifling. A lefthand Large Siler from Jim Chambers, with the single trigger. The stock was a...

    Loading resistance

This group was shot with my flintlock deer rifle. It has a well broken in Colrain .54 caliber barrel. It was not broken in as Rich Pierce suggests but with a thousand or more patched round balls. I think Rich's way would be a lot faster and maybe better. I was shooting .530 round ball with .015...

.45 caliber RB enough for deer?

Several years ago my vision went downhill very fast. I could no longer shoot consistently with primitive open sights. For a few years I had been thinking about the day this happened and was planning a peep sight I would like. So I made a few and they cleared up my vision pretty good. Now my...

.45 caliber RB enough for deer?

One problem with discussion of accuracy is that each shooter's accuracy is self judged according to their own personal standards. It's too easy to say "That's good enough", while another shooter would consider that target junk. My own personal standards are pretty high. It took me a long time...

.45 caliber RB enough for deer?

Why not? If the gun can hit a pie plate at 50 to 75 yards and is of adequate power then the ability of the hunter must be questioned and carefully considered. It doesn't hurt to step on a few toes now and then. It might just wake a few up.

.45 caliber RB enough for deer?

I shot this plate a few months ago with my .40 caliber flintlock I built to be my main turkey rifle. In my state it's legal to hunt turkeys with a ML rifle. The load was my proven turkey load, 60 grains 3fg, .018 Pillow ticking patch. I bought several yards of some fine material many years ago...

Kibler SMR frizzen broke in two

Around 20 years ago I built a 40 caliber flintlock to be my dedicated turkey rifle. It's legal to hunt turkeys with a ML rifle in my state. I used the Chambers Lefthand large siler lock. After completion I shot the rifle probably 200 shots getting it dialed in and finding the best load. So one...

    NMLRA fighting

I washed my hands of the NMLRA many decades ago. I was young, 19 or 20, and competed in a Regional match. It was all very exciting for me at that age. I took a 3rd place in the 50 yard bull. Due to work I couldn't attend the last day when the medals were handed out. I, in a series of phone calls...

Turkey Hunting Successes and Pics Please

Me too Hanshi. It's still too early for them to draw accurate conclusions. In the meantime there is talk of pushing opening day back a couple of weeks to give the turkeys more time to breed undisturbed and lowering the daily bag limit.

Turkey Hunting Successes and Pics Please

Lots of theory's but little evidence. I personally think the predators do more damage than people think. The property has a 10 acre pond and a ton of coons. I used to trap hogs there and ran cameras, at first dark the coons began to show up for dinner of corn, they will suck a turkey egg dry...

Track of the wolf and the lefthand builder

Guys, I just wanted to let interested shooters know the state of Lefthand kits at Track seeing as it's often mentioned as place to get LH kits. And vent a little. That's been accomplished even if a troll stomped all over it. DH

Turkey Hunting Successes and Pics Please

No turkey this year. In fact I never heard one. Nor seen a track or scratching. Statewide our turkey population is in a serious decline. Some areas have none at all. Sadly my property is one that no longer has the wild turkey. The state is working the issue but my hopes for my hunting are dim...

Track of the wolf and the lefthand builder

If anyone thinks I really dissed on Track in my little post then you don't know what real complaining and criticism is. In fact it takes a Troll to make something out of nothing and fellas we are dealing with a real one here. Too bad us lefthanders can't discuss amongst ourselves what we...

Track of the wolf and the lefthand builder

I am so happy that you are perfectly satisfied with TOW. You can't begin to understand how pleased that makes me. Just as you can't begin to understand what my posting is really all about.

Track of the wolf and the lefthand builder

Track has only one LH kit now, a Hawken. The Isacc Haines no longer has the full desription write up as they once had. And there are no prices listed. Nor anyway to add one to the cart. To me that means they are not available. The same goes for the Leman stock. Except for a Hawken the rest are...

Track of the wolf and the lefthand builder

I know how to shoot RH guns well enough. When I was younger LH rifles were non existent as far as I knew. But I'm not younger anymore, I'll be 70 in a few months and now I only shoot LH rifles. I now have 2 LH flintlocks that I built exactly the way I want them. I also have 3 bolt guns with LH...

Track of the wolf and the lefthand builder

I wonder what's going on with TOW? A few years ago they offered several LH kits like the Isacc Haines, SMR's, a lancaster and a Hawken or two. Now it's just the Hawken. I once bought most of my supplies from Track and built a couple of their rifles too. But I'm lefthanded and it seems they no...

    Drilling out flash hole, Results!

I drill out my white lightning liners one number drill at a time until I get the ignition speed and dependability I want. .016 is good for the .40 and most .45's, while my .54's are drilled out a good bit more for hunting. I have never experienced accuracy loss by doing it this way. But if one...

What can I use to increase moisture resistance of my stock?

GaHunter I saw the photos of your rifle on the Ga. forum. A hunting rifle shouldn't be bright and shiney but rather finished with some shine, then that shine can be knocked back a little with a scuff pad. Frankly that rifle could use a little shine to really set her off. I use Chambers original...
