    How’s This Look?

I’m working ion a Kibler Colonial. The assembly and fit up is finished and went very smooth. Perfect in fact. Now it’s finish work. So I have the entire lock cleaned up, polished and assembled. I finished up to 00 steel wool and then used Oxpho blue and used 0000 steel wool to take that back to...

our 54 cal. Woodsrunner arrived today

My Colonial kit arrived couple days ago. Very impressive. Mine is straight. In any event the kits is really nice and the lock is a work of art. I won’t be able to start it for a while so it sits in the shipping box waiting.

    How’d I Do?

Total time was about five hours. Half of that just staring at it thinking of what to do next. There’s a small gap at the very bottom but final adjustments and inletting the toe plate should take care of that. It’s just the factory part of the stock as I left the LoP as long as possible. I...

    Butt Plate Inletting.

Bill, Eddie Van Halen said that playing guitar wasn’t that hard! Lol!

    Butt Plate Inletting.

So I have been procrastinating on this buttplate. I’ve been away for a month or so and had thought long and hard how I would go about it. I’ve read, watched and watched again videos online and finally went at it. I’m on day two, lol! I’m taking it in small steps. I have it about 1/16” all...

    Loose Pin Holes?

Haven’t finished anything. A long way to go yet.

    Finish options for hardware

A satin finish looks really nice. My build is also nickel silver and I’m gonna do a very fine satin finish on all the furnishing and a worn back cold blue for the barrel and am gonna leave the lock a bare satin steel finish to patina over time on its own.

    Loose Pin Holes?

Ok. I know it’s normal to have to take apart and put together parts and the barrel many times during the build process. I am finding that my pins are becoming loose. So much so that a few I am able to push in and out with my fingers. Lightly peen the pin for final assembly? Slightly larger...

OK, dumb question of the day

I misdrilled the lock on my current project. I threaded a screw in with red locktite and peened it over and filed flush. Invisible. But I see that you have a different issue. Get a new lock plate. Simple.

    Build Time

So far I can say with a good amount of certainty that it takes forever.

    Success!!

Thanks everyone. I do t know how much more I will get to do on the gun for the next couple months. I’m leaving for a 2 month long deployment overseas this weekend. The rest of the thimbles and buttplate will have to wait until spring. It will give me time to contemplate my best work. I’m...

    Success!!

Thanks Bill. This is sure an endeavor in patience lol. My first time building a gun and I and treading water, barely lol. It is immensely satisfying though. Trying to compartmentalism how each part of the gun looks in my minds eye and then making that happen is not easy. But I’m driving on!

    Success!!

True. This drove me crazy. I sat on doing anything after I glued in the wood, agonizing over what would be the most invisible repair. But it worked out and I’m very happy. I also switched to using Permetex Prussian Blue. Way less messy and doesn’t seem to migrate everywhere like the inletting...

    Success!!

A big thanks to everyone here in helping me through a beginner problem. As you may have read in a thread where I misaligned my entry thimble during inletting. Well I’m here to say that a combination of solutions ended up working out really well! I took Bill Raby’s advice and fit a sliver of...

    Need Some Help.

I also discovered that big pink erasers will clean up inletting black from the stock pretty good. I’m ditching that stuff, way too messy and gets everywhere and gonna use either permatex blue or plain candle soot.

    Need Some Help.

Ok so I glued in a small strip of wood I cut from a piece of the stock. It’s identical grain obviously and I tried my best to orient it well. The joint is very tight. It’s wrapped up in big rubber bands for a clamp until tomorrow. I used Titebond. Haven’t touched the thimble yet. Gonna see how...

    Need Some Help.

Spent a couple days pondering this. I’m gonna do what Bill says and for a piece in there, file off the one side to center the material on the tail and inlet it again. I have a piece of the stock I can use from when I cut it down to length. I’ll saw off a piece in the same area as the I let...
