Calculateingz powder load on smooth bore rifles

SmokepoleSam, if I can play back what you said; when I use a powder measure set at 87 and fill it with Pyrodex, I would be using 58 grains of Pyrodex?

If I can follow up, how did you come to 87 gr figure?

Calculateingz powder load on smooth bore rifles

Next week will be my first attempt at shooting a smooth bore rifle, specifically a TC New Englander 12 ga. I’m familiar with the loading process but need to confirm what I’m told is the proper way to determine powder load. Most of what I read about BP in shotguns is that the amount of powder is...

CCI Magnum #11 Caps Back in Stock at Cabelas/Bass Pro

Just FYI, Cabela is now adding a $20 charge (hazmat fee) for delivery of caps to the store for pickup.

    N ew Englander nipple thread

Today it is a matter of being able to shoot. #11 caps are rarely available these days so alternatives are needed. I’m looking at musket caps and 209 primers.

CCI Magnum #11 Caps Back in Stock at Cabelas/Bass Pro

Thanks Richard. I normally buy them from Basspro/Cabelas but they are perpetually out of stock. I’ve received emails from them saying stock has been replenished but still shows out of stock and can’t be ordered on line. So I’m still looking.

    No 11 caps

Anyone know a good source for #11 caps that will ship? I try to use Cabela because they ship to a nearby store for pickup. They send notification of new stock and I respond immediately to place an order and they are ‘out of stock’ again. Ugh.

What to use for a powder measure?

I’m glad your friend is going to mend. I pulled a very rookie mistake like this a few years ago. I had purchased a container of 50 gr powder pellets to evaluate. I took a few shots and next shot created a spark the went directly into the open container of pellets. No explosion but a hugh...

    One among none…

The interesting thing about the South Carolina state ranges is that they are self supervised. There are about 10-12 posted files and in the tears I’ve been shooting here all participants are courteous and patient. That is a blessing.

    Poor man’s peep sight

A while back I recall reading about a simple but effective peep sight that MAILEMAKER wrote about. At my age I’m having more and more trouble lining up the rear sight, front sight and target. The target seems washed out. What do I have to loose? This past week I made the poor man’s peep and...

    One among none…

Living in a metro area means not many opportunities to shoot back powder. Thank goodness South Carolina provided more than 10 state maintained outdoor shooting ranges and one is with in spitting distance. Unfortunately in the past two years I’m the only BP shooter. Lookup Palachucola state park...

    Hello from Alabama

Welcome from SC. Not offering this as a suggestion, just a story about right/left eye dominance. A friend who has been shooting BP for 40+ years (right handed) with many, many awards. At 70 lost sight on his right eye, no trouble, taught himself how to shoot left handed and became just as good...

    Stuck cleaning brush

I had the same issue with my 50 cal and tried EVERYTHING possible and failed. Was really ready to dump the barrel and a great grandfather of BP friend of mine remove the nipple, poured some 4F in, screwed in the nipple, boom, it came out never to be found again (so definitely point it down...

    Browning vs bluing

I’m getting ready to finish my rejuvenation of a 50 cal TC barrel. Amoung other things, the bluing was gone and replaced with spotty rusting. 99% has been removed and I’m considering bluing when an old friend who has shot BP since way, way back suggested browning instead. After looking at the...

    Musket Cap on TC Hawken

Can you pass on any further info regarding the New Englander utilizing 209 primers? Very interested.

    Musket Cap on TC Hawken

When #11’s become very scarce, I switch nipples on either my HC or CVA rifles for muskets caps and wonder if I’ll go back to #11. Definitely a stronger flash and once in a while it will flip the hammer back to it mid-point latch on the CVA. I’ve been in the habit (when using #11) of firing off...
