    Jukar parts

They don't have a website, they are real easy to deal with on the phone.

    TRS "Expedition" Rifle

Runningbadger, can you point me to the source documentation for the 1800 Harpers Ferry? I hadn't heard about that one. Having spent some time on the big muddy up in Montana the L&C expedition is kind of a personal curiosity thing. Thanks

    Southern Rockies Possibles bag

Thanks Cooner... hate to admit it but I kinda forgot about this thread until about 2am this morning :shake: Anyway, I would have quessed that type of work is more spanish than native.

    Camo or Traditional

I choose to go traditional, didn't get anything but it felt right to me to do it that way. Got a lot of funny looks from other hunters. I maybe saw one other sidelock out there during the whole season besides mine and my buddies (we were hunting with flinters).

    moccasins

4 days? wow, I made a pair that has lasted 2 days of hunting and seem to be able to do more. I did tear the sides of them a bit because of a fitting issue. I agree, the leather was a lot lighter than I expected. I'm in the process of making a heavier pair (that will also fit better now that I...

Show me your NorthStar West Smoothes

I don't have either of those models, I have the officers fusil. Despite my poor build of the kit (don't even ask for pictures) it is one of the best guns I own for reliability and overall toughness. I haven't shot it in a while so I'm sure my accuracy will be off but back when I was shooting...

    Elk Hunt Nov. 16th

Mike, got back from muzzleloader deer up in 6B a couple of weeks ago. The weather is warm and everything is really dry. Prepare for long shots cause you probably aren't going to be able to put much of a sneak on them. Even at the quietest stalk I still think I sounded like a heard of druken...

Which rifle for a first flint lock?

I don't have personal experience in dealing with these guys but I like some of the stuff they have. Sitting Fox

    Survivor Man?

I'd want my smoothbore flinter as well, with shot I'd have good chance at smaller game which is usually easier to harvest than bigger game and still have some round ball if I was to stumble on to something bigger. I carry a small fire kit in my shooting bag, and if I'm caught without a belt...

    problems fleshing deerhide

There ya go, Sean and the others have given more detailed advice than I remember. I'm actually trying to work up the gumption to finish working a couple of elk hides I have. Good luck

    Using Black Powder

No opinions on the substitute stuff, never tried it and haven't heard anything about it. In a way I hope somebody comes up with a workable substitute for us flinter shooters with all of the regs they are slapping on the real stuff. Comus hit it on the head with everything that I know about...

    problems fleshing deerhide

It's been awhile, but you might want to try getting the hair off (if that's what you are going to do anyway) it might loosen up that layer or allow you to put better pressure on those tough areas. From what I remember it was all in how wet the hide was and the angle of the tool. You might try...

Cleaning up after using Moose Snot

Geesh, if there were anymore common sense required on it I'd have to make myself a note to breathe :rotf: :rotf: I was reasonably sure that it was somewhat normal but couldn't put my finger on the why of it. Do you think a couple of sessions of spit patching would clean it out it or should...

Cleaning up after using Moose Snot

Has anyone had difficulties cleaning a bore after using Moose Snot? Here's the story... I am a 99.9% cut at the bore spit patcher. I've been doing it for a lot of years and it hasn't let me down. This past week I did my first ever deer hunt and wanted to do it as PC as was prudent. I opted...

    Using Black Powder

Welcome WC, you'll love getting back into the sport. Like most others have said real black powder is the way to go. I haven't checked up in your neck of the woods but there's only one place that I know of here in Phx that sells it.

    Southern Rockies Possibles bag

Looks great Cooner, bet it has plenty of stories it could tell. When you say apache saddle bags is that a name for a certain artifact or saddle bags that apaches made and used? I'm just curious, I'm slowly learning about the tribe (they lived in most places I trek and camp so I figure maybe I...

    Other than a Hawken.....

So what I'm getting here is that a "generic" rifle of the 1800's could possibly have a hooked breech, and the use of wedges was not uncommon at all. Interesting food for thought. I apperciate the warnings to about the fragileness of the fore arm. I'm not going to be doing anything soon, I...

    Oregon hunting rifle

The good thing about the .58 is that you can do roundballs and still have what you need at 100yds to take down just about anything. You can invest in a mold to cast your own balls and keep yourself in buisness for a long time. I was able to find an old DGW mold on E-Flea pretty cheap a couple...

    Other than a Hawken.....

Does this mean that they used a standard type key and the key was pinned from underneath? What was the typical way to "capture" a key? I've seen the terms before but just guessed at what it meant.

    Other than a Hawken.....

Awesome, thanks for all the info. I must admit I'm kicking this thought around (it occured to me while tramping thru the woods looking for mulies) for the small selfish reason of ease of cleaning. If I didn't have a deep love of the fullstocked flintlock I'd be a half stock shooter just...
