The loaded flintlock above the hearth

If you have errant sparks drifting up over your mantle, you have bigger problems to worry about.

    Eye injuries from flintlock?

I was 10 feet to the right of a flintlock, watching it go off, when I felt debris hit my face. I was glad to have glasses on.

    Mail issues

I don't know what's worse, not being able to track a package, or watching it get delayed as it bounces around the system. Had an Amazon package I paid extra for next day delivery, saw it got to my post office in the early afternoon of the day it was supposed to be delivered, and then sat there...

    Eye injuries from flintlock?

I wear my safety glasses when shooting with my group, but I don't bother with ear plugs. I don't find the report of muzzleloaders to be that sharp, but I *have* been pelted in the face with bits.

Pedersoli Bess Carbine Half Cock Question

Your flint looks short. Flipping it over might help. You also might have excessive friction on the frizzen pivot or where it rides on the spring. It doesn't take much to slow it down.

Making a mainspring for a lock with a stirrup on the tumbler

Machine shops are nice, but there's great satisfaction in handwork. If/when the world goes to crap, the AR-15 crowd will eventually come to appreciate flintlocks and true gunsmithing skills.

    Barrels Left Unfinished?

Based on what I've learned on this forum and on the American Long Rifles site: Typical pre-1800 American finishes were white or French gray, with polished bright being an option. Bluing was expensive and generally only found on high-end English guns. Browning was not done on American guns in...

    Moldy Leather

Maybe get some Fiebrings leather dye and wipe the leather with it. The alcohol will kill any mold, the dye itself will cover any stains.
