    New Englander .54 problem

I shoulda figured it out but thought it was an acronym for something ... (30 years a soldier and every new Commanding General has to invent a bunch of new acronyms to signify or something). My wife, being a teacher, is always trying to proofread my stuff but has given up except on the most...

    New Englander .54 problem

I just checked my field notebook and my .54 GPR groups great with 100 gr 2f w/ .015 patch and .530 ball (apparently it's just a tiny bit bigger bore than the NE) at 50 yds and is easily within a minute of a deer at 100 and the patches are fine. I guess if Mastodon season ever opens in NC I'll...

    New Englander .54 problem

Since Photobucket went crazy I don't know how to post pics ... but some look like a donut and others look like they are almost a donut (multiple small holes right in the middle) so I don;t think they are being cut by the rifling. A different patch material similar thickness might be a...

    New Englander .54 problem

That trailer is interesting especially it's light weight of 13.5 lbs. I have tried tying the deer onto the bike, then walking the bike/deer out which usually involves several attempts to get the deer tied so something doesn't get into the wheels. (One particularly grueling attempt at this that...

    New Englander .54 problem

She is the kind of person who wants to learn to do things for herself. She reloads the TC Hawken .45 she learned to shoot blackpowder with and can disassemble an AR down to the same level as a good infantryman.(That was her first move up from a .22) I had originally thought of my Cherokee for...

    New Englander .54 problem

It's way off track but ... When Jenny was 11 she came to me and said "Pahpaw, when my dad was 12 you took him deer hunting with a muzzleloader ... and when Uncle Billy and Uncle Seth were 12 ... you took them too. And I'm almost 12 and you haven't said anything to me about going deer hunting!"...

    New Englander .54 problem

I do have a bunch of pre-lubed patches of undetermined age ... heck they might be 15-20 years old. I'd much rather use up them than the wonder wads I was planning to use on conicals ...

    New Englander .54 problem

I have a New Englander .54 that appears to be in excellent shape except for a chip in the toe which to me is no big deal. I took it to the range equipped with .530 balls and an assortment of patches ranging from .010 to .018 all dry lubed w/ the Dutch Schultz method. I settled on .011-.012...

    T/C Cherokee disappointment ...

Well .. I have now function tested the lock a coupla hundred times (and beat a coupla .22 brass to smithereens) and the gun has performed as it's supposed to so I guess it's a "keeper" and the next step is the range. Planning on keeping the charges at least 10 gr under "book" to protect the...

    T/C Cherokee disappointment ...

There are certainly some guns that are a very bad idea to dry fire .. like just about any rimfire. It will certainly damage the firing pin on those. OTOH I have dry fired my 1911s thousands of times working on my grip, sight alignment, trigger "feel" and follow through. I competed a bit in the...

    T/C Cherokee disappointment ...

For my muskets ... I have taken two brass spent musket caps and taken a small dab of Shoe Goo and put on top of one, then put the other spent cap on top of that one so the Goo forms a bit of "cushion" to attenuate the hammer blow. Seems to be good for about 20 or so "snaps" and I can see no...

    T/C Cherokee disappointment ...

I want to "function test" the lock repeatedly to assure myself it is reliable before actually firing the rifle. It also served the purpose of "tapping" Kroil down around the nipple which seemed a little tight as in past tense. I just applied light pressure and the nipple came right out ... :)

    T/C Cherokee disappointment ...

Well I took it back off last night and the "fly" did move freely ... but there seemed to be a bit of grit throughout the lock ... not bad but present. So I sprayed it down with what I had at hand, WD-40, and layed it on paper towels to "drain". The lock seems to be functioning normally ... or...

    T/C Cherokee disappointment ...

I recall seeing the "fly" and it seemed to move freely. I'll take another look tomorrow. The seller has offered a refund but if I can feel the gun is safe I would like to keep it. Mebbe I'll bring it along and stop in Phoenix for an expert inspection on our annual late Winter trip out to...

    T/C Cherokee disappointment ...

Well ... I kinda half assed it. I tried to pull down on part 52a with needle nose pliars ... to no avail. Then I put a drop of Kroil on where 52a and 52 meet. But that typically takes a bit. But it looked like the right ball pint pen spring would go around part 52a ... and it did. First try...

    T/C Cherokee disappointment ...

I knew I bought that set of gunsmith screwdrivers years ago for some reason ... But before I start unscrewing things ... I have worked the hammer/trigger some 40-50 times ... and it does fine as long as the gun is upright ... but will not cock if on it's side ... which seems curious ...

    T/C Cherokee disappointment ...

Well I adjusted the set trigger screw ... and I found a place it would cock ... and "fire" ... but half cock is a bit sketchy ... To be honest I have never pulled a lock before ... The gun looks unfired. I looks like a wall hanger ...

    T/C Cherokee disappointment ...

I "won" what appeared to be a very nice Thompson Center Cherokee in .45 ... and it arrived today. The problem is the hammer will only go to half cock and will not lock back. Is there a solution to this ... or have I just been "had" ...
