    Thanks for the info.

    Leman Half-stock Nose cap

I am beginning a Leman half-stock flintlock precarved rifle project and was wondering about what type of nose cap to use. I have a steel plains rifle nose cap and a brass grooved nose cap. I was thinking that the brass nose could easily be shortened to about an inch. I could also possibly pour...

    Wood under rib question.........

Chris, I was wondering if you have any other photos of the Silas Allen Half-stock? I currently have a New England half-stock kit patterned after a Silas Allen. I am interested on any detailed photos especially of the tang and lock areas.

    Pin hole chip-out.

I recently finished a Chambers York rifle and while completing my final assembly I caused a chip-out at the rear trigger guard pin area. I took some superglue and glued the chip-out. The problem is that when you look at the area from an angle the flaw is very apparent on the nice smooth rifle...

    Finish Problem

I recently finished a Chambers York rifle and have noticed that I have some light areas on the stock where I probably steel wooled to hard. I stained the stock with Danglers brown and Ditchburns red with about 5 or 6 coats of Chambers oil. Is there any tricks of the trade that I can use to fix...

    Forestock thickness

I was wondering how thick the forestock should be on the sides of the barrel on a York/Lancaster longrifle. I thought I read somewhere that it should be 1/8 of an inch to the rear thimble and 1/16 thick to the nosecap. Also how thick should the forestock be at the ramrod channel.

    The latest off the bench

Excellent job. The gun looks great. What type of stain did you use, I love the color. Seeing that you are from York was it "Ditchburns stain". I have a bottle of this stain and tried it on several pieces of curley maple and it looks close to the color of your pictured gun. Also what type of...

    mahogany stain

I am trying to come up with a good mahogany colored stain, I have tried several combinations but am not totally happy. Some colors are too red, and some are too brown. Does anyone have a good formula.

    TOWT Vincent Rifle

Has anyone built this rifle from TOWT. I am looking to purchase this rifle in 45 cal with a 7/8 barrel. What are some of the negative aspects or difficulties in building this kit. The write up in TOWT's catalog indicates that the Vincent rifle "is one of our easiest rifles to build". I have...

    Kit Selection

I am in the process of selecting a kit to build. I am interested in a Early Lancaster flintlock or an Ohio Vincent percussion halfstock. My experience is building several Pedersoli kits where everything is pre-drilled and only minor shaping is required. What kit should I purchase for my level...

    Kit Question

I am currently interested in purchasing a kit such as an early Lancaster, Issac Haines, Dickert or a Vincent Ohio rifle. My experience consist of building and finishing several Pedersoli kits that were all pre-drilled and required only some minor shaping. What style of rifle would be good for...

    Permalyn Sealer

I am in the process of finishing a flintlock kit. In the past I have used LMF Permalyn Sealer with either Tru-Oil, Chambers or Dem-Bart as the final finish. I was recently told not to use LMF Permalyn Sealer due to the fact that it is polyurethane based and is subject to cracking and shrinkage...

    First project almost completed

I am also thinking of building a Vincent rifle, How may hours did you spend on it and what was the most difficult part. Were you happy with the TOW kit or should I try Pecatonica of MLBS.

    What Color Stain

Get some small curley maple boards from Woodcraft or from some other seller and cut into 3-4 inch pieces. Then experiment with the various types and combinations of LMF stain. I have been doing this experimenting and have come up with some good colors. The piece of wood cost me about $25.00.

    Ohio Vincent rifle kit.

I am thinking of building an Ohio Vincent rifle for my next project. Is this rifle kit too difficult for a person who has no experience drilling any tang or lock bolts or has not done any major or difficult inletting projects. Should I be looking at a full stock insted of a half stock for this...

    Brown Bess barrel question.

I am currently in the process of building a Pedersoli Brown Bess and want to keep the barrel in the white so that it develops that nice aged "grey" patina. What grit sandpaper should I use for the sanding? I also plan on removing by grinding or sanding the serial number and "black powder only"...

    Hand rubbed finish

How do yo get that "hand rubbed" oil finish. I have used Tru-Oil, Chambers and Dem-Bart and as of yet have been unable to get that soft satin oil finish. Each of my finishes have a tendency to come out too glossy.

    The Bastard Gun

Zonie, Your gun looks great. I love the color. What did you use for the stain? I like the reddish/gold color. I also like that soft satin finish. It looks especially smooth. What material(s) did you use to achieve that "hand rubbed" finish? Everytime, I use Tru-oil or Chambers I get a...

    Equipment question

Seeing that I am not too steady with a hand drill, I think that I would be better off purchasing an upright 16 1/2 inch drill press to drill tang, lock and barrel pin holes. Woodcraft currently has two upright presses advertised, a Delta Model 17-965 and Jet Model JDP-17MF for $399.99. Does...
