    Size of Felt Wads?

I can guess why the WD-40, a petroleum product, is not a good idea. Consider the amount of flash produced by the cap before the chamber ignites. I would guess that the cap flash ignited the WD-40, which in turn ignited the caps on the remaining cylinders. Spraying the pistol probable got WD-40...

    New Hawken Rifle advice

I have the Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken in .54 calibre with the Maple stock, a great rifle. On trail walks, 60 grains of GOEX FFg, and 0.010 precut patches, pre-lubed with a 50/50 mix of Ballistol and water works great.

    Warning! Save Your $$$

I always check Track of the Wolf before buying a book. If they have it they usually give a summation of chapter titles the books. I look at Venturino's pistol book as I have his other 2 similar books, but passed as there was no cap and ball revolver chapters.

    New GPR - not impressed

It was the poor quality of the wood, fit and finish, of the Lyman Great Plains rifle, that persuaded me to buy a Pedersoli Rocky Mountain Hawken in .54 calibre. I have had 2 Pedersoli Sharps, and a Pedersoli Springfield, so I knew the quality was there.

I have run into the red patch syndrome after cleaning my muzzleloaders. The full procedure for cleaning my Pedersoli 0.54 cal. Hawken is the following. I run 2 or 3 soaking wet patches of Ballistol and water mix at the range using both sides of the patch. At home, which may be one or 2 days...

    Ballistol?

The use of olive oil for patching is interesting. In the “Muzzle-Loading Cap Lock Rifle”, by Ned H. Roberts, he mentions that sperm whale oil was the preferred lube for muzzle loading target rifles.

    Ballistol?

I live in Vancouver BC, and we get lots of rain and it’s humid here, and Ballistol is not hygroscopic, it doesn’t absorb water. Ballistol is water soluble and the water will evaporate and leave a film of oil. Ballistol was originally developed for the German Army for weapon cleaning. A friend...
