    54 cal. powder charge?

The rifle I use for hunting is a TVM with a .54 Long Hammock half round barrel. I have used this rifle for 14 years and the best load I have found is 75 g. of 3F Geox with a patched round ball. At 80 g. my groups start to open up.

what do i chose and why?

That a impressive buck by anybody's standards. South Alabama Florida panhandle deer don't stack up to that one.

what do i chose and why?

I have a TVM early Virginia rifle in 54, I went with the 36" barrel for hunting in thick cover. I am very happy with TVM's work.

    3f in .58

While I would like to hate a scope on a muzzleloader, the older I get the better the idea sounds. The sights on my rifles are not a clear as they used to be.

    Pedersoli or TVM

I have a TVM .54 Old Va. that I have hunted with for 10 years. I have no complaints with the rifle. I went to the shop and told Matt that I wanted a .54 Tennessee rifle and he advised me that that stock would be very comfortable in that caliber. I would give them a call and talk to them, they...

Seeking advice on a Long Rifle for 1st flintlock purchase

I wanted a TVM Tennessee in .54 as my deer rifle, I talked with Matt Vance at TVM and he recommended that I get the Early Virginia, the stock distributes recoil better and I have been very happy with it.

What will more powder get you?

I have to agree I use the same load for target, plinking, or hunting. The fewer variables the less to go wrong in the woods.

My New TVM rifle arrived today

I know you will enjoy the new rifle. I have a TVM Early Virginia rifle and a pistol both in .54 I have been very pleased with mine.

What will more powder get you?

That's the load I use in my .54 TVM Early Virginia flint for deer. I mainly limit my shots to 75 yards or so, that is based on my old eyes and the sights on my rifles.

    V-notch or square

The old timers shot the same rifle a lot more than most of us will ever attempt. It reminds me of a old .22 my great grand father used. It was his only rifle and when I looked at it 30+ years back after he had died I realized that the rifling was worn down only a faint trace was left. How many...

Opinions on TVM Early Virginia Rifle?

I have a TVM Early Virginia Rifle in .54 with a Long Hammock barrel. I had it built as a deer rifle, it may not be completely "correct" but it shoots very well and it kills deer as dead as a correct one. I have owned this rifle for 10 years and taken around 15 deer and two black bears with it...

    Dry Firing Your Flintlock?

    Austin & Halleck

I had a A&H rocklock a very good rifle. They were on the upper end of the market and when the economy turned they went out of business. I sold mine to a friend who still shoots it and loves it. If I had not had a custom rifle built I would still hunt with it.

First outing with new (to me) dixie tennessee mountain rifle

In both of my .54s I have found that 3f will work well as a priming charge. I have never used 2f as a priming charge. Experiment and enjoy the new rifle.

    Flintlock Squirrel Rifle?

Yea I have done that in the past. That is why I have a .50, .54 and a .58 for deer. :headslap: Since I am retiring soon I will have to restrict my self to one rifle. I am leaning towards a 36. But am still sitting on the fence and watching people who know more than me discuss this.

    Flintlock Squirrel Rifle?

I have been on the fence for several years, always trying to decide which caliber. No one I know has a small caliber rifle I can try, I keep reading all the negative on the 32, but on the internet who knows whats right.

    My second build

I wish my first build looked half that good. My father gave me a Dixie plinker pistol kit in 1968. The stock was a sawed blank the barrel was a 12" peace of a barrel. The best I can say is it shot, it shot fairly well and it did get this BP monkey on my back. :haha:
