Reasons for Misfires? (igniting main charge)

Thought provoking ideas. I don't have a bore light. Maybe it is time to invest! I also have not been picking between every shot. The crud in the breach its clearly thick and wet and needs further investigation

Reasons for Misfires? (igniting main charge)

One thing that is not being clarified here is what kind of patches are being used during the firing sequence. I am using store bought pre-lubed round yellow patches for shooting. They are not wet and I am imagining that that would change the frequency of wet patch cleaning needed. What are...

Reasons for Misfires? (igniting main charge)

Ok so I am still having the flash in the pan and and no fire issue, and it appears after a half a dozen shots or so. Using new flint, Goex 2F in the chamber, and 4F in the pan (mostly full). I was sure to use only slightly damp patches cleaning after each shot or every other shot and running a...

When you are talking about a breech cleaner, do yo mean one of those flatblade screwdriver looking attachments?

Reasons for Misfires? (igniting main charge)

Really good tips thank you. My goal is to wipse as little as possible. I have read lots of posts where the shooters don't wipe except every 10 shots or so, and I would certainly like to get to that point if possible. I am only using the real stuff - Goex powder This rife has been very...

How to safely unload OLD smoothbore

Need to unload my 200 year old M1807 54 cal. Springfield. I would estimate the round has been in there well over 100 years, but it is impossible to tell. I have a nice brass range rod and a std. 50 call screw ball puller. My inclination would be to put some lube down the barrel to loosen...

My Grandfathers old Smoothbore, what is it?

Thank you all. I did some googling myself and this rifle clearly appears to be a M1807 Springfiled Indian Carbine. Back it goes on the mantle, darn, I wanted to shoot ot! Now to start a thread about the best way to unload it.

My Grandfathers old Smoothbore, what is it?

Barrel is 33 1/2" measured externally muzzle to breach. I can't measure internally till I extract the lead. I have uploaded many more pictures and added them to the others. It appears a nail in in the nipple. Should the cock/hammer have the opening in the area that contacts the cap? I can't...

My Grandfathers old Smoothbore, what is it?

Now that I have been shooting black powder for a month or two, the idea hit me to look at the old rifle that has been handing on the wall for years. It was my grand fathers. Yes I checked it, and yes it appears to be loaded! I would appreciate it if you folks could shed some light on exactly...

Reasons for Misfires? (igniting main charge)

I searched on the moose juice and a lot of folks as well as the original recipe call for soaking patches and then drying them out. I am assuming you are talking about using a wet patch?

Reasons for Misfires? (igniting main charge)

So how much should I be swabing? Dry or wet between shots. I am using prelubed patches and ammonia free windex for the cleaner. I swab with a wet patch, turn it over swab again and then a dry patch both sides?

Reasons for Misfires? (igniting main charge)

As a newbie flinter shooter I have had pretty good good luck with reliability of my rifle. The last time at the range I shot around 10 rounds swabbing wet then dry between shots, then all of a sudden I got a no-fire (pan ignited OK). I inserted a paperclip in the touch hole, and got another...

    Flintlock Loading Safety

I have been enjoying shooting my first black powder gun, my (new to me) Investarms repro hawking rifle. I am wondering what most folks do to insure that an accidental discharge does not happen when loading the rifle. I am mostly concerned about the last step of ramming of the ball down the...
