    Half Stock Rifle

I wanted to share a rifle I recently finished with you all. I don’t know what to call it, maybe an old mans gun. It’s a maple half stock in .45 caliber, it has a 36”-13/16” octagon to round tapered barrel. The hardware I got in a bundle of parts I bought so I don’t know exactly what they are...

Building a Chambers Isaac Haines rifle kit

Dave, I looked at RCA and would say that was applied. I also found pictures of another Haines rifle that has similar treatment in Masterpieces of the American Longrifle. Tony

    Planning a Rifle :)

Looks like a cool project. I know you said the siler lock is a close match but have you looked at the L&R classic ? They have a left hand lock with no frizzen bridal. Tony

    Jim Kibler's Colonial Kit

I like a darker finish so I have finished all my builds with black trans tint dye and aqua-fortis , followed by a hand rubbed oil finish. The way I do it is, dye the stock black then gently sand it back with 320 grit sand paper to reveal some contrast and follow it with aqua-fortis and blush...

    Jim Kibler's Colonial Kit

Thanks Henry. The brass is finished with birchwood casey brass black then gently steel wooled back, and laurel mountain forge browning solution for the steel parts. I used black trans tint dye to get the darker stain color, which would be similar to using tannic acid. Tony

    Jim Kibler's Colonial Kit

Thanks for the comments. I stained the stock with black trans tint dye then lightly sanded it back with 320 grit and applied the aqua fortis. After stain I applied 2 coats of chambers oil, then probably a half a dozen coats of boiled linseed oil.

    Jim Kibler's Colonial Kit

I agree with Dave Person that with very little effort you can assemble this kit and have a beautiful and historically accurate rifle with top of the line components at a very reasonable price.
