I tried ww maxiballs in my deerstalker 54 cal stainless. It was real hard to ram the bullet down the barrel. Soft lead out of the same mold rammed much easier Regards browndog

    Lyman Stainless Deerstalker questions

I have a lyman stainless 54cal deerstalker. Maintenance is easy clean it normally and you will have no trouble. It was my first muzzleloader and I like it very much. It shoots well. TC made a firestorm stainless traditional but it is now out of production. I would not worry about the traditional...

Left handed firing of zouave rifle

Had a look at the nipples provided. Both taper from about 3/16 inch at the base to normal at the hammer. I think I will fill with weld and drill a 1/16 hole and see if it does better. Getting new nopples here is like finding rocking horse poo. Regards browndog

Left handed firing of zouave rifle

I test fired an antonio zoli 58 cal carbine said to be a zouave replica with a 24 inch barrel. Looks like my 54 cal deerstalker. on firing I get interesting black powder marks on my right forearm not quite burns as the hammer has an open front. I think I may be using too much powder as the...

    Lyman DeerStalker

I have a stainless 54 cal deerstalker and love it. I have only shot conicals out of it so far but it is a rabbit rifle out to 70 yards. Put the lyman 57 sml receiver sight on it it helps my groups with my old eyes. Regards Browndog

    new flintlock advice

I can get pedersoli, t/c, traditions and lyman in the main stream guns in Australia but value reliability of ignition over price. Are any of these better in the lock department than the others or am I better getting a green river rifle works flinter at 3 or 4 times the price? Regards browndog

    developing loads

today I went out and shot with a 45/70 case of ffg (about 80 gns) 2 shot groups at 50 yards. It seems to like this load and all shots would hit a rabbit. I cleaned with a damp patch between groups and did 2 inch groups. I then tried the 54 cal lubed felt wads. The loading is easier as it lubes...

    developing loads

we get some seriously big pigs. Sambar deer also that get up to 600 pounds. Buffalo up to a ton but I think I would use my 45 70 again on these as they can stuff you up if you dont put them down. In the main feral goats and normal pigs and the odd fallow deer are what is around my place and...

    developing loads

my mold is a lyman 540619 405 gn maxiball. It hits like a hammer and kills very well. It is discontinued now I think. Given what I have been told on this forum I think I should get it to shoot well as to date I have not been cleaning in between 5 shot groups. Loading the last three has been very...

    developing loads

my modern cartridge gun is a marlin 45 70 lever. I just like big bullets and rainbow trajectory and dont mind getting close. The addition of the greased felt wad seemed to increase pressure and blow my groups. I have started to work my loads backwards in 10 grain increments and will report if...

    developing loads

the stainless barrel has 4 thousandth of an inch rifling depth any suggestions on patch thickness would be helpful with a .535 or .530 ball. The lubricated felt wad made loading very much easier using the maxi ball. Fired maxis have a good base. Game size deer goats and pig to 150kg. Regards...

    developing loads

A ball will kill all I shoot but Lyman doesn't recommend balls only conicals. The stainless lyman barrels have shallow grooves groove .55 bore .542 and a 1 in 48 inch twist. Does any one use balls in these rifles? Regards Browndog

    developing loads

I have a Lyman Deerstalker stainless 54 cal and am new to this game. I have been loading 100gn ffg wano powder by weight putting the cartridge paper down the bore as a wad and ramming a lyman 405gn maxiball on top.At 50 yds it puts 2 rounds within an inch on the bull and throws the rest around...

    54 cal cartridge cheap

I have found that insulin pen lids from lantus solastar pens hold over 120 gns ffg and a 54 cal maxi ball to friction fit. Greased maxis I wrap in oven paper and use it as a wad. If you have any diabetic friends there is a big chance you can get the lids as lantus is a very common insulin. Works...
