    ramrod drill bits

+1 Do not get the bit from TOW (top bit in picture)! That sort of bit is horrible for end grain, not to mention they are dull. On my first gun, I used the TOW bit and it punched a hole through the belly in about 6 inches. For end grain, I highly recommend a brad point bit (bottom bit in...

    2nd build finished

Here she is folks. A Lancaster inspired .54. Swamped barrel. Stock blank from Dunlap. Stain - Homer Danger golden brown. Finished in 4 coats of True Oil. I think it came out right purdy! Take a gander!

    Hand planer

IF you can cough up the dough...one of these Veritas low angle planes is the cat's meow: It has super fine adjustment capability and a very thick blade that is very hard to sharpen, but once it's sharp, it stays sharp! My other go to plane. Lie Neilsen low angle:

    Stock Pictures

Hi Gus, Thanks for the info. I always blast the stock off with the air compressor after using steel wool, but as you know that's no guarantee all of the loose and/or embedded fuzzies will be removed. I'll head over the hardware store tonight and puck me up some of the pads you mentioned...

    Stock Pictures

Hello Pete, I have used the True Oil once, and have seen whatmultiple coats will do. As the other member noted, I'm gonna go with the steel wool bit to knock the shine off! Your suggestion also sounds like a good idea. Thanks for the input!

    Stock Pictures

This is my second gun. The blank came from Dunlap Hardwoods. I'm sure everything is not PC with respect to architecture, etc., however I just wanted to share the pictures. Is used Homer Dangler golden brown stain, and have two coats of True Oil on it at the moment. More will be added in good...

    Next Build - Lancaster

Just a quick update on the on the .54 Lancaster inspired rig. I done got the lock in: My attempt at making my own ram rod and entry pipes. Making the entry pipe took a year off my life, and it ain't even that great. After my brief experience with trying to bend brass in different...

    making wood filler

Although it's probably impossible to hide a mistake completely when using filler, some ways are certainly better than others. Back in my kayak/canoe making days we would use epoxy with colloidal silica as a thickner, then add a splash of wood flour (not sawdust) for color, and if necessary some...

    Next Build - Lancaster

I hear you. The only thing that brought me comfort was that I knew as long as the sides fit well, I could fix any mistakes on the underside of the barrel with a little bondo/epoxy/glass/filler strips  Since I only worked on the thing 30 minutes or so at a time, and I would only get less...

    Next Build - Lancaster

Things in the shop got put on hold for a week or so when I walked into the house and saw rain coming down from the ceiling. !@#$!@#$ hot water heater, in the attic of course, leaked. Anyhoo....we got that fixed, and can now get back to more pressing matters. As a refresher, this is going to...

New .50 Cal Maple Stocked Rifle

I asked the same thing a while back, and Dave answered kindly. The reply is in: Post#1433459 (Topic#291292) I don't know how to link to it though

    Gun #2 - Inletting a swamped barrel

Thanks guys. The advice is helpful! I'm shooting for less than a month now, instead of Christmas :rotf:

    Gun #2 - Inletting a swamped barrel

Howdy fellers! I'm starting on my next gun, a .54 Lancaster inspired build with a 42" swamped barrel. The first gun I built had a straight barrel, which was relatively simple to inlet with a table saw and a router  , but with this one, it all needs to be done by hand, and I think I...

    Next Build - Lancaster

Thanks everyone! Thanks to all the good advice, I think I'm slowly learning the nuances of the different schools. I really do like the look of the style with the pronounced comb drop, and/or Roman nose, but they don't look like they would be fun to shoot, in large calibers anyway.

    Next Build - Lancaster

Howdy fellers, I ordered my piece of wood, and have my eye on a .54 swamped barrel, and am thinking about my next build. I hear the term "Lancaster" used quite frequently when describing a rifle, but I'm still ensure exactly what physical attributes make a "Lancaster". Are there any good...

    First Build Finished!

Took her for a dance this weekend. I've never fired a flint lock before. Come to think of it, I've never seen a flint lock in person before I made this one. It was almost anti- climactic  First I just put some powder in the pan to see if it would flash, and sure enough it did! Then I...

    First Build Finished!

I intentionally did not make this rifle perfect. That way I have some things to improve on :rotf: As far as the next gun, I have no specific use for it, I just enjoy building things, and I look forward to the challenge of inletting a swamped barrel. I just want to be sure I have a large...

    First Build Finished!

Thanks for the kind words everybody. I will keep all the advice in mind. I do know that my next build will be a reproduction of a large caliber (.54 or above) with a swamped barrel. If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears!!!

    First Build Finished!

Thanks fellers. I'd like to engrave the patch box eventually, but I need to practice more. My attempts look like I just drug a nail across the brass....pathetic. Colonel, I'll keep that in mind about the screws! Thanks!!
