Importance of Shot Placement vs Power

Latest cow elk harvest was 20 feet on Sept. 20. One frontal shot just to right of sternum. .530 round ball powered by 70 gr fffg went full length and moderately flattened ball rested just inside the hide. Made "lung pudding", looks like someone put a wire whip or blender into a big tub of...

What is your choice of shot container for the field?

When hunting with other primitive shooters, Irish head adjustable charger and pouch. Capper or primer flask or horn. When semi - modern blue two compartment for pre measured shot and powder. Wads of different thickness in right and left hunting vest pickets. Pheasant opens up this coming...

    Larger Flash Hole

Besides loss of pressure and power from enlarging the touch hole diameter, gas cutting from hot gases will erode and enlarge the touch hole, often resulting in an elliptical opening. Constant and uneven erosion will sure mess up accuracy and cut slits into your pan and lock bolster if left...

    Fire starting

The thick rope of pure cotton, sometimes netted with a braiding is used to stuff into cracks and the tar or other caulk pushed over to seal and waterproof. May have spellings of "ocum" and "oaken" mistaken. Usnea is the lichen like "old man's beard". Marcassite and flint works nest on...

    Ballistol-based lube?

My experience with 4:1 water to Ballistol is the dried patches smolder. Not good on the range and especially bad in dry elk woods. So no Ballistol for me.

    Ballistol-based lube?

Yampa Valley Mountain Man, did you get your elk? If you are Bob from Steamboat hope you did. I shot mine 45 minutes into the first day of hunting at 20 FEET. .54 round ball with beeswax and bear grease lubed red striped pillow ticking.

Wads Vs Lube Vs Paper Cartridges

Lube over ball won 't work when carrying for grouse hunting during hot weather. Both grease and wads add to cost of loading but o.k. for target or competition. By

    Captured rammer

Warren Selke made a pair of copies of William S. Locke's Hawken pistols. Knowing him, he probably fabricated the swivelling ramrod device from scratch. He worked out of the Denver, Colorado area.

    1851 navy hunting

Thanks for info on 240 gr Kaido bullet. A black powder cannon is a muzzle loader. Has any asked about using them to hunt elk in Arizona? A bowling ball mortar flushed out some elk but as the game warden and I were both hiding behind a big tree when the bowling ball went out of sight and...

    1851 navy hunting

Check first with your state's big game hunting regulations. Here in Colorado a .44 cap and ball revolver would NOT be considered a legal means of take or legal weapon for deer. And not supposed to be used for coup de gras during muzzle loading rifle big game season. Historically, the 1851...

    Steel

Derek Stevens who appeared on Mountain Men makes spear points, throwing knives and small tomahawks from railroad spikes. Low carbon good for paper weights, letter openers. Beginners sometimes use a length of rail for cheap anvil. It is good for hardening the tip of a copper pressure flaker...

Bow and arrow verses Flint Guns

Lot of interest in this blog. Bow lances more of a warrior society regalia rather than a shootable bow. Could be used to count coup or stab. Properly shaped and hafted flint points can be re shot if not damaged. I cast wax copies of flint points in aluminum, drill holes to match the weight...

Authenticity of Veteran Arms Brown Bess Muskets

Never mind. The Rifle Shoppe in Oklahoma. Instead if just using abbreviations, write out entire words just ONCE in a post so folks will know what you're talking about. THEN you can go back to the abbreviation. Letters to editor in newspapers are notorious for using mystery abbreviations.
