Which Hide and Tools for Ball Bags?

I used blacksmith sides for all my bags. Deer and other small game hides will be too thin and not hold their shape.

    First and Second Horrn

When I was making my horn I used the hot water as well to shape it due to the danger of burning the horn itself. I used a heat gun once on horn to shape it for a spoon and it got too hot and bubbled up and smelled terrible lol. :barf:

    First and Second Horrn

I like them! They look like they were made by a human and not all machine finished looking. For my tastes I like the old world, made with hand tools look. Too often you see things that look machine made/mass produced, and it looses that handcrafted feel. I think you did a great job on them both...

Pewter casting /inlay work I did last week on a hawk handle

Thank you for the compliments. To get the figure to pop I use an old luthiers trick for flame maple topped guitars. I apply a thick coat of ebony oil based wood stain and let it soak for about 5 mins and wipe it off. I then sand it off once it dries and the stain holds onto the figure in...

Pewter casting /inlay work I did last week on a hawk handle

I used a manilla folder and cut 1 inch strips one for each side of the ring I carved out. I then taped them down to the shaft. I cut out a piece big enough to cover the strips and the carving with a notch in the center for the funnel and taped it over the strips. I made a funnel from same folder...

Pewter casting /inlay work I did last week on a hawk handle

I tried this for the first time last week with my nephew. He wanted to make a tomahawk so we both picked up one of the pipe hawk kits from TOTW so I could show him how to put it together. We also decided to amp up the difficulty level by trying pewter casting inlays in the handles. I will post...

thanks, I will keep that in mind. I received a barrel last week and if it turns out well I will try another. I am right now finishing up an TOTW pipe hawk that I cast/inlayed pewter in the handle of.

Well, good news! A member here sold me a rusty barrel for a very good price, so it looks like I am in for a little smithing work in the near future.

souce for old shot out ML barrels

I wanted to use old barrels as that is what was often used when making a smoking hawk.

souce for old shot out ML barrels

Thinking about forging a smoking hawk and using a ML barrel for the blade and tobacco pipe end. My question is where would I look for a source of ruined barrels to use? I have seen good barrels for sale online but I have yet to see anyone selling shot out worn barrels.

anyone attempted to make a TC Hawken correct?

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking about building one from a TOTW kit but it would cost me over $800 and I don't have a clue on how to inlet stocks or the tools to do it with :idunno: . In an ideal world I want a fullstock hawken with flint ignition in a fancy maple stock with a Rice round...

anyone attempted to make a TC Hawken correct?

I have a TC Hawken and the single underlug and brass furniture bugs the heck out of me. Now I know I can get iron furniture from the Hawken shop but I am still left with a non correct single lug barrel. So has anyone attempted to add the extra lug and move the front lug and fill the center hole...

how do you fix a sticking patch box?

The one on my rifle is retained in place by a spring tensioned thumb release. Is that what you meant?

how do you fix a sticking patch box?

I think the sanding and wax have done the trick. Here in Ga it is pretty humid so if its OK now maybe it will be fine all year round now.

how do you fix a sticking patch box?

not sure how it does in the winter as I haven't had it but a month. I will try some wax and the sandpaper if the wax dosen't free it up a bit. thanks.

how do you fix a sticking patch box?

I have a wood patch box on my rifle that is a real pain to slide open. What's the best way to remedy this? I have to tap it open and don't want to ding it up.

finally got pics of my new .50 rifle

On the strap I have a vent pick and brush hanging from a deer antler button I made. And there is a powder measure tied to a cord in the bag that's tied off to the d ring on the bag.
