    Barrel Finish

I just recently built a heat cabinet, but for humidity I use a temp-adjustable fondue pot with a baffle above it to keep condensation from forming on the barrel while making it quite humid inside.

    Forum Member passed away

I didn't know Twoshadows but my prayers are with him and his kin. May God and Saint Michael watch over you on your journey through the lands between the worlds, and may all the Archangels protect all you hold dear. Godspeed. Durch schatten und licht, Himmel wartet auf dir.

    Stock Stain Color?

^^^ I use something very similar to this method on maple. I, however, use aqua-fortis from wahkon bay which is just dilute nitric acid. Rather than using a torch you can use a blow dryer. Due to the lower heat, though, you gotta apply the AF in coats and blow dry each coat individually. This...

    browning troubles

I'm finally getting around to re-browning the barrel of my Jaeger using Laurel Mtn forge browning agent. The reason I'm re-browning is due to the fact that when I first browned it the Wahkon Bay agent I used turned out spotty. However, since I was really itchin' to shoot the thing, I decided...

    Can't quite decide.....

Not too long ago I decided to pull out a old CVA Hawken that I built from a kit and checker the wrist. At this point I've got both panels pretty much finished aside from a 2nd border around each panel, maybe bring the diamonds to a point, and of course do somethin to reseal the wood. Problem...

    Pecatonica River longarms

Thanks, I'm pretty proud of it myself, though those scratches above the patchbox that showed up when I began to finish the stock REALLY irked me, at any rate.. It has the 36" straight barrel though the swamped would've been nice but it was a birthday present so I ain't complainin'. I also...

It really will shoot upside down

I like the way you think Bakeoven, nuttier than squirrel manure. :haha:

Thanks, that's actually the first muzzleloader I built.

    Finishing a Kit

When I use linseed (which I did on that Jaeger I posted pics of) I generally use a multi-step process which starts with linseed and ends with tung oil. For the portion of the process where I use linseed I'll mix a solution of about 40% linseed and 60% turpentine and about every 2-3 coats...

    Finishing a Kit

Laurel Mtn. Forge makes a nice plum brown. I would advise against Wahkon bay though as it has a tendancy to bead up on the surface and cause an uneven finish unless you mix it with triton detergent. As for the stock, you're on your own there as I'm partial to oil finishes mebbe in combination...

What brand rust-brown are ya usin'?

    Pecatonica River longarms

I built a Jaeger kit from Pecatonica, here are the links to a few pics. The stock is obviously not of the fanciest wood out there but I personally think it looks quite nice, though I am a bit biased. Only thing I'll mention is that the brass castings were totally unpolished so I had deal with...

    Most Difficult Part?

Small aside to Wildatheart, I don't know what method you are using to inlet the tang on your Jaeger buttplate but when I did mine I simply coated the back of the plate in soot and gouged off wherever the soot appeared on the wood, this takes awhile but it worked pretty well for me. Here's some...
