    Old PA hunting-no more

A mature forest is a virtual desert for deer and many other animals. The leaves of the overstory harvest the bulk of the sunlight (plant food) leaving the floor relatively barren. If you want game leave the deep woods. Find areas where fire, weather, logging etc have created clearings. The...

    Howdy from PA

Welcome from Lancaster County PA! There are two excellent custom ML builders in PA. The Emigs at Cabin Creek and Colonial Riflesmith. I have a flinter from each and they are both a joy.

    Thoughts on wet weather

Keep your head and feet warm and dry. An extra wool beanie and pair of socks add very little weight to your pack. If it is cold and wet I will add a pint flask of gasoline along with a safe of kitchen matches. If you need a fire then you NEED a fire and dry kindling is no sure thing. I like the...

    Thoughts on wet weather

A small error in the wrong conditions is life threatening. Close to home does not matter if you are incapable of going there. A slip and fall that renders you immobile? It is 1700 hours and light is fading. What do you do?

How did American forces reload in battle?

The whole rifle, empty of ammunition, remains a formidable weapon. Particularly if the bayonet is affixed. Anyone else remember practicing the vertical butt stroke for hours? Of course, that was with the M1 and M14. The M16 is 2 pounds lighter, and 4 inches shorter. Handier and easier toted...

    Bore Scope Results - Interpretation?

Nylon and bronze brushes are softer than the steel of your barrel. I would prefer a good commercial black powder solvent, or even soap and boiling hot water to household items like peroxide or ammonia. If you are still unhappy, get someone like Bobby Hoyt to rebore and rerifle to .54 caliber. Do...

    Shotgun stock?

If you do not like the stock which is on it then perhaps it is a matter of fit. You do not hear about it on this forum, but on others stock fit is considered very important. A gun which fits you properly will be easier to mount, will be easier to hit with,. and less tiring at the end of a long...

How did American forces reload in battle?

The rifle or musket is a long arm. Loaded with a bullet it can keep an enemy at a considerable distance. Unloaded it is still a long piece of work and can ***, shove or club an enemy. With bayonet fixed it becomes a lance or spear. Small wonder repeating cartridge arms were quickly adopted when...

    Thoughts on wet weather

Depends upon how well you dress/prepare. Keep the warm on the inside and the wet on the outside and you can hunt comfortably in miserable weather. If you can find anything resembling a sporting shot. Several times walked up on groups of deer bedded down in the rain. I think the rain noise...

    Origins of chili con carne

Far as I am concerned chili is a stew. And when I make a stew there are some basic always there ingredients. And then whatever else is laying around and interesting goes in. Leftovers to the fore. With the exception of fish. Seafood has no place in chili.

    Trade gun for grizzlies

You can not outrun griz. Jesse Owens could not outrun griz. Un less you have grenades or a flame thrower shot placement is the only thing that will save you. Panic is not the friend of good shot placement.

    Trade gun for grizzlies

If I was at the front of that parade I would prefer a flame thrower.
