.50 cal Lyman Great Plains Bullet Zero

One thing I did notice on the data sheet work up…it was for Swiss BP. I can take the same weight charge of Swiss and Goex in my 50 caliber longrifle, and the Swiss will have a 25 to 30 percent velocity increase over the Goex. That could make quite a difference.

    Easiest finish to apply

Never believed the linseed oil fire thing either until I was watching a YouTube video one day on the many ways to start a survival fire without a match. They actually put a camera on a linseed rag inside a cardboard box, setting outside with the top of the box open. There was smoke around the...

Let's see your Belt or Rifleman's knife

This is a 18th Century French Patch knife. I made the blade from an old table saw blade. Melted the first one down trying to get it hot enough to harden and had to start over but I liked the end results. This was my first attempt at making a knife.

Let's see your Belt or Rifleman's knife

A Rifleman’s knife and sheath I made using a Jeff White 8” hand forged blade and a antler handle from a dropped antler I found on our property.

Goex vs. Swiss in Pedersoli .45 Frontier Rifle

I wonder have you played around with the powder charges or are you trying the same charge by weight or volume in all the powders? Might be that the Swiss’s extra velocity is blowing the accuracy. I found that my rifle liked 90 grains of Goex but only 75 grains of Swiss.

Goex vs. Swiss in Pedersoli .45 Frontier Rifle

I’ve always heard that 2F powder burns at lower pressures than 3F powder so you would have a higher pressure spike using the 3F. Typically the 2F will give you the same velocity, or more, if enough barrel length/bore size space is given for the extra burn time. It just builds slower. That is...

Goex vs. Swiss in Pedersoli .45 Frontier Rifle

I shot Goex years ago before I found out about Swiss. I had to swipe my barrel about once every 3 to 4 shots or my point of impact would start climbing up the paper. After switching to Swiss I never wipe my barrel. Last time I shot my .50 cal flintlock I had 32 rounds through the barrel when...

Sorry I just saw this…how much does it weigh? Also is it operational at all the way it is or will it require work to function? Thanks!

    Hello from Virginia

Thanks everybody. I grew up shooting TC cap locks and went to my first living history event when I was in Junior High back in the early 1990’s. I got to handle one of Allen Sandy’s long rifles there and when I got done drooling I bought a Armstrong kit from Pecatonica Long Rifle Supply. I...

    Flintlocks: How to Shoot Them

Thanks for the information. I had heard of some of that but didn’t know that picking the vent would help speed up the ignition by creating a tunnel for pan flash. Also had never heard of leaving the powder slightly loose, instead of seating the ball tightly.
